I must have a different interpretation of fourth lines than other posters...but if you can't fight, I don't want you there. That goes for you, too, Matt Ellis! I'm fine with Kaleta/Tropp on the right and McCormick (as long as his eggs aren't too scrambled) on the left, but I'd love a fourth line center with a little pop in his game. Considering how soft our top six is (at least at this point in the offseason...things can change), I don't want Gerbe anywhere near our fourth line.
We've essentially replaced Goose's toughness with Foligno's, which makes us nearly the same level of Charmin soft as last year's team that Lucic used to wipe with after dropping a deuce on Miller.
I'm hopeful that by going big in the draft (and acknowledging they need size and truculence), Darcy is also going to look to bolster the bottom six with much-needed toughness (Ott for 3C, baby!) and add a power foward to the top six.

Don't count on that cap being 70.3M. If the owners have their way, the % of money going to the players will decrease, leading to a lower cap--and there's no guarantee of a salary rollback to compensate.
Where did this idea come from that miller isnt a leader? Hes a dick to the media who cares, he cares about this team more than anyone in that room

Last I heard, most GMs were operating under the assumption that this would be next year's cap.

Not sure how you got Bobby Ryan with Ennis, Hodgson, Foligno, and McNabb all still on the team (bravo, sir!), but I would love the heck out of him. I might be crazy, but I'd rather pay Prust 2M than Arnott. (And I'm not saying Prust is worth 2M for bringing some pugilistic prowess and PK ability...)
Semin at 6.5M also makes me nervous...like the lock all my doors, get a war hammer, and yell, "Don't come in here!" kind of nervous.

Myers was a lot tougher... Although, and it kinda goes against my feelings in regards to leadership, Myers started with the mean in the playoffs against Philly if I remember correctly....
Here's the thing...Doan is a great leader. However a power forward in his 20s signed for 3 more years > a 35 yr old captain at what it likely a large caphit for 1-2.
Lots of ways to be a leader.
You can talk, call folks out, etc. Doan's got the credibility to do that for Buffalo, and I'd be happy if Buffalo signed him. But it's not going to change any of the bad apples. When Drury was brought in, bad apples were allowed to leave (Satan). It's extraordinarily hard to force an underachiever / bad locker room guy to turn his attitude around once he's got a few seasons in the league. Have to do it early. Otherwise, the change has to come from inside that person.
Leadership by example works too. Leaders are folks that perform at a high level, and do what the coaches tell them to do. Briere and Drury were likely that type of leader, though it doesn't preclude verbal leadership. Guys like Parise and Ryan could do the same thing. Those types get their credibility by being very good. They act team-first, and everyone gets in line.
Personally, I'd rather Regier take a run a Parise, and move out any bad apples. I think the effect is greater than signing Doan to show mid-20 players "the right way."
If they could make a package similar to that work, I would pull the trigger (there's enough in the pipeline that the Armia and 1st don't bother me a bit). I can't imagine the Ducks not insisting Ennis be in there or McNabb, but hey, I'd bow to Regier if he got Ryan with Stafford as the centerpiece.
Bobby Ryan + Steve Ott would be a fantastic offseason in my eyes. You add a big-bodied powerfoward who makes your top six way more dangerous, and you add a veteran center with defensive chops and truculence.
In two moves (though certainly not easy moves), Regier could make this team harder to play against, and therefore, considerably better.
He claimed he didn't want to be a rental, so the Leafs got no value out of him. He promptly did exactly that when he signed halfway through his final season with the
Canucks. The Leafs are run like a pure business and Sundin was a good brand.
Or he thought he was going to retire and was talked back into one final stint with the canucks. He played nearly his entire career on a leafs team that was mediocre for most of that time and never once did he demand a trade or become a cancer in the lockerroom, but he's an A-hole because he didn't want to uproot his family in the middle of a season so he could provide his employer with another asset. Great logic...

I swear I saw Stafford in there.... Yeah, I totally do that. I might even do Armia and Pysyk... Sure they could both be great, or they could just be... Not great.

I think we'd be crazy not to look at Doan, at the very least as insurance if Parise/Ryan cost too much or otherwise are unattainable. He may want to go to a surer Cup bet, like Pittsburg, or a team like Detroit.
I doubt his salary is going to be that big but if it is then he's not worth the risk. That said, if healthy he should remain productive for a while. It's not like he's a guy who relies strongly on athleticism.

Honestly I think some players either have a physical edge to their game or they don't have it. I don't believe adding Regehr had any effect on Myers whatsoever. I was simply pointing out that he used a pretty poor example. Regehr was brought in for his physical play and defensive zone play which were pretty decent on the whole. He was also brought in for his leadership ability which is intangible and very hard to quantify so we could argue about that until we're blue in the face. I liked the move then and quite frankly still think it was a good move on the sabres part
It's a really unfair portrayal of Semin. He's quite capable at both ends of the ice and has made great strides with the work ethic problems that tainted his early years.

Maybe he had a chance to discuss it with his family before he made a decision and maybe he changed his mind. Is he not allowed to do that? He was under contract with a team and was put in an ackward position. it's really easy to criticize someone when you have absolutely no idea what circumstances led to his decision, but hey you stay up there on your high horse.
