I'd be all over Mueller if he gets to free agency. He's a risk with his concussions but he's young enough that I'd take a shot at putting him on this team.

As long as they don't have to give him multiple years, there is no downside to trying out a guy like him. When you're a bad team with infinite cap room, these are the kind of gambles that can do wonders for you.

I understand you don't want this, but this team is devoid of top end talent or assets to get top end talent. That's pretty amazing with the team's record the last several years, but that's where we are.
So you're saying unless a team has both a bonafide #1 center and dman that they should go into full rebuild?

Phaneuf was a funny addition to that list as well.

Benn is our #1 C, and he matches up with anyone in the league. We don't have a #1 D yet.

Really? A converted LW that's never finished in the top 40 in points is our Crosby?

Depends on what you've got to build on, but generally if you don't have or can get a solid C and D combo including top end talent for both, you're not going far. This isn't really that shocking. Why do think this team's been stuck in neutral for so long?

IMO, Phaneuf is a clear #1 D. But how about Chara if you don't like that pick?

Really.

Also I'm glad that the bar has been raised from "#1 center" to "Crosby". 28 other teams might have trouble matching that.

You're the one that said Benn matched up with anyone in the league. But beyond that, I can think of 15 centers offhand that are better than him.

Don't get me wrong; I like Benn a lot, and as I said, he's the one guy I would keep in a total rebuild, if he would stay. But thinking that he and Eriksson are going to lead us to prominence with a bunch of good to ok prospects doesn't make any sense to me.

Really??? Comparing everything to Crosby makes the most sense to me too...because generational talents come along every year!

15 centers that are better? Alright, we just disagree wildly on how good the player is so there's really nothing else to say.

Give him a 1 year deal, which I think he'll get offered because of his concussion history and see how it all plays out for him. If he manages to stay healthy keep him around longer. He has the potential to be a good player for us.

There's plenty of successful team atm who have #1 Centers significantly worse than Benn. Think St. Louis, Nashville, Boston when they won the Cup, etc.

Now a #1D, yes I'd agree with you. We don't have one.

crosby, malkin, giroux, tavares, spezza, stamkos, backstrom, datsyuk, toews, sedin, kesler, kopitar are the only guys I would take over him...maybe Bergeron because he is more complete...guys like Staal, Getzlaf, Thornton, Kane are close...so I have Benn around 13th

I never said we should, if you'd actually read my post.

That's a #1 in my books. If he's in the top 20, I'm not sure how he isn't a #1 center.

Kane isn't a center, by the way. Not anymore.

It wouldn't be a homer pick to have Bergeron over him at this point, I'd say they're pretty even until Benn breaks out.

The only one we'd have a remote shot of signing is Comeau. Everyone else will be heavily courted by one of the better teams.

We have plenty of cap space and I think we can outbid other teams for Mueller and Semin, how else are we going to reach the cap floor?

I didn't notice Sarich but he's on my list of acceptable pickups. Mueller (and Latendresse) may be more available, but Semin will go to a contender or Detroit.

Add Juri Hudler to your list of possible acquisitions. He'll probably test free agency. You could get Jussi Jokinen like production and results from him, but you'll probably have to shell out $4 to 5 million in the short term. Anything less than 4 and I'm guessing he'd just stay in Detroit.

I really like Matt Carle and hope we get him, i think he is better than Wideman and Garrison. I hope we stay away from those two.
