Should we Retire #10?

GR raises an interesting possibility.

Quote:
Congrats to the most exciting player the Panthers have ever had. You have to think his No. 10 will be the first player's number to be retired by the team.

It will happen eventually. This year perhaps?
The question is should the Panthers retire Pavel's number?

Personally, I'd rather see #34 retired, first.

No. 4 seasons, no matter how great they were do not deserve a total number retirement. Retiring a jersey should be reserved for a franchise player that spends his whole or most of his career with that team, and for those who win multiple cups with the team while being a key contributor to the SC win.

However, I would be all for it if his jersey/number was honoured and lifted to the rafters, just like Calgary did this year with MacInnis.

Same thing for Beezer. Retirement, no. Honor his jersey/number in the rafters, yes.

We have yet to witness a Panther player deserving of that honor. Period. I'd like to see this tradition not be marginalized.

Don't think so, he wasn't here long enough and several players have worn that number since. He's been retired almost a decade.

Now that is an even more interesting idea. Didn't even think of that possibility.

the team won a total of 0 playoff games with bure. uh... no. torrey and tallon wouldn't let that happen (i hope). it would be an embarrassment.

Overboard, wouldn't be an embarrassment.

Like honoring it from the rafters. It's in the den, but so is Worell's.

opinions. i don't think we'll ever know because it won't happen but what did the guy *mean* to the franchise? nothing. i loved watching him as much as anyone but he had no lasting meaning - he never won a playoff game (let alone a series or cup). retiring his number is akin to saying "we think individual achievement is as important as anything else in this sport". it won't happen. if it did...

Don't think he was around long enough for his number to be retired. Actually I don't think any numbers should be retired, I would prefer for them to only be honoured. That would allow players to earn the the opportunity to wear numbers that have previously been worn by greats from the team. I think that develops a great tradition.

I don't know who follows association football but Man Utd have shirts such as the number 7 that a number of "legendary" players have worn (Best, Cantona, Robson, Beckham, Ronaldo) that they don't just give it to anybody and Shinji Kagawa just turned down the chance to wear it as he didn't think he had earned it.

^ Agreed totally. The 1st ever player worth to have his jersey retired will be the benchmark for generations to come. That player has to be someone pretty amazing and serve this team first for a long long time.

I feel like when you decide to retire someone's number, you dont even have to think about it. A Sakic/Roy...etc.

I love Bure, but the fact that were even debating it says we shouldnt. When the time comes to retire a Panther number...we will know it for sure. For example, when Huberdeau retires after 20 seasons with us and 3 rings we can retire 11.

Would be a great gesture to the greatest Panther ever (up to this point). Back-to-back rocket richard trophy, team high in points and goals. Maybe my favorite player of all time. I'm gonna say yes to retiring his number.

Couldn't agree more.

Hopefully Huberdeau / Markstrom are the first.

Nope. I loved Bure, but he wasn't a career Panther. I still think he's remembered more as a Canuck than a Panther.

Like StrangeVision said, I'd sooner see #34 retired, but as Catscratchfever said, I wouldn't want to start marginalizing the honor. Bure was great. Beezer was great. But neither deserve to have their jersey retired.

Perhaps when we have a career panther - and I'm talking 15 years or so - who is instrumental to our long term success, THEN we retire his number. But only then.

I love Bure and while he might be the best player we've ever had, I just don't see any reason on why'd do so. When I think of the most known players in our history, I think of guys like Weiss, Mellanby, Beezer, Dvorak, and more. Guys who were with this team for many years I think are more deserving of this honor.

Absolute joke if a number gets retired at this point. The Panthers organization hasn't yet seen a player worth retiring, and may not see for a long long time.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to do it. Leafs have a pretty good system if you ask me, only retired numbers are two guys who suffered career ending injury/death, the rest are just honoured and kept in circulation.
