He may be good in the future, but he isn't walking into the Oilers team and leading them to the playoffs
You quoted my post where it says that I agree that he's getting quite a bit over-rated. Kid is way too thin at 6'2", 183 or so.

If you watch film, you'll see a solid playmaker that doesn't have a booming slap shot, but who does have a very accurate shot from the point that he uses effectively.

The comparison to Matt Carle isn't actually too bad. He's a bit bigger and one would hope he's a little better decision-maker, but his well-rounded 2-way game will translate to the next level.

The comparison to Matt Gilroy is about as atrocious as the claims that he's a first pairing NHL player next season. It just reflects that people haven't actually scouted the kid at all.

I would hope we have a chance at Schultz especially if we can't get Suter, or Weber. People mention the young core at EDM being attractive, but I would like to think our young core could have at least a similar appeal.

This is the guy who listed TOR, VAN, EDM, NYR and PHI as his 'favourites' to land Schultz before Bob McKenzie listed the same 5 teams. Guy covers the Badgers but it doesn't really mean he has the 'inside scoop' but his opinion seems decent enough... however it's just an opinion. It's not from the mouth of Justin himself so it probably means nothing.
If they really want him Homer will call Big Ed have the kid flown in on his jet to close the deal.

Seriously, how can the Flyers tell the kid he'll get ice time unless they let him know they'll be moving a dman or not resigning Carle (which I doubt based on reports).

I think anybody serious about offering the kid is going to give him NHL ice time next year. I think a trade would probably be implied. This really will be about fit. I would send the jet with Giroux and the Schenn brothers, who happen to train in his home town I believe, on board.

There's an outside chance but I'm not counting on Schultz. Holmgren and Snider's best sales job is that this team led the league in rookie minutes and goals (going by memory), so they can legitimately offer Schultz every chance at not just a roster spot but as high as his performace will put him.

Then again, this is Ed Snider. He can take Schultz up in his jet and give him the choice of 3 options:
1) Any 3 models of his choice
2) One person to disappear and never be found
3) Chris Pronger (concussion notwithstanding) showing up at someone's house and making them pee their pants

I believe it's around ~3.8 million if it includes all pertinent bonuses on top of his $925,000 max ELC.

Which, if the new CBA includes a bonus cushion as anticipated, pushes it back down to 925k. I believe the deal has to be for 2 years.

Whether Schultz wants to come here is obviously up to him but we do have a lot to offer.

- Young team built to win now and in future
- Veteran leadership
- Success with NCAA prospects.
- Veteran D man to learn from (Timonen)
- Solid D core with room to play
- Lack of #1 offensive D prospect
- Most importantly weve given rookies lots of playing time and have had success.

Schultz is a great fit in Philly. Like I said earlier it would give us 2 solid young Defensemen with potential, Schenn being the other.

Would be nice to have a Schultz again -- seems like good karma. Yeah, I could certainly get on board with this.

Offseason perfection accomplished if we sign Schultz, Doan, and Gaustad.

Hartnell - Giroux - Voracek
Doan - Schenn - Briere
Simmonds - Couturier - Read
Talbot - Gaustad - Wellwood
Rinaldo - Sestito

Timonen - Schenn
Coburn - Grossmann
Meszaros - Schultz
Lilja

Bryzgalov
Leighton

Remove Leighton and I am happy. Clemmensen is much better.

Wasn't Clemmensen the one that was *****ing that he wasn't getting enough play time?

He can sign a three year entry level deal. I'm almost certain of it.

EDIT: Yep he is still 21, so he gets a three year deal.

According to pretty much every media report I've seen, he gets a two-year ELC. I'm not sure why, though.

That lineup sure does look sexy, and Gaustad would be perfect for the fourth line (though I wouldn't want him at more than his most recent cap hit). I still want a real sniper on G's wing, but I could live with Voracek to start. Also, there's no chance Timonen-Schenn is our first pairing... more like the third pairing, especially since Kimmo's minutes have to be limited.

Lastly, what kind of contract would you be comfortable giving Doan?

Yea this is weird because his birthday is July 6th, meaning he would be 21 when he signs his entry level deal. Meaning it would be a 3 year deal.

EDIT: I figured it out. It is a two year deal. It's not the age when he signs the contract, but at the age he is on September 15th, which would be 22. I was wrong, you guys were right! I learned something today though.

1. Read could swap in on Giroux's line since he has a better shot than Voracek if that makes you more comfortable.
2. Our d-pairings at that point would be interchangeable so I didn't even consider moving Timonen's pairing down. They'll all get roughly the same minutes.
3. I'd be willing to throw 4.00m/year at Doan and 2.75m/year at Gaustad.

I am not ready to give Read fulltime 1st line minutes.

As much as I would love to have him here Doan is a pipedream. if he leaves Phoenix he will probably stay out west.
