I can see Montreal making an offer, but it wouldn't be a great one. Late round pick, ( or straight up for Kaberle )

I think the isles most likely see their top 4 as set and want $1.5m-$2m #5 defenseman. One who plays physical and can be paired with a rookie.

Had to do it. After all, the Isles were going to trade every draft pick they had for Nail.

I knew it wasn't even at all. Just the stupidity of the Islanders organization is my underlying reasoning there.

Having lost Rafalski, Stuart and Lidstrom over the last 24 months maybe Martin would be a good fit on Detroit? It seems like Detroit is always finding ways to make reclamation projects work out for them

Isles have been stockpiling picks since the 2008 draft.

I don't agree with their 2012 draft offer.Their first 3 picks were ranked in Bob Mcenzie's final, top 49 ranked prospects.I'm happy with their draft results.

They however, must feel 18 yr old Murray will develop into a franchise d-man.

There a big difference in adding what your scouts think is an 18 yr old potential franchise D vs. a struggling Martin, making $5m

Martin killed his career by leaving the NJ Devils, like so many before him have done. Some players just don't get that certain teams make them better than they are and that they're better off by staying in that organization that brought you up.

Lou is a master of realizing this and why he never ever gets into bidding wars with other teams. He didn't even offer contracts to guys like Paul Martin, Scott Gomez, Vlad Malakhov etc, guys who had prominent roles on the Devils and then just fell off the face of the earth after leaving. There are reasons for it.

That's not going to happen, Milbury is no longer the GM in Long Island

And yet, they were smart enough to realize Vis at $3m was better bang for the buck, then Martin at $5m.

Does the smart enough include the offer they made to Ehroff last summer?

Isles offer was 6 yrs/$33m.I'd have been happy with those ufa numbers.

Isles actual payroll this season was $36m.I was disppointed Erhoff brushed off their offer.

If Martin had much value, he would have been the one traded. Not Michalek

He's stuck ala Keith Ballard

Honestly though, I was reading that St. Louis is interested in adding a top 4 defenceman to their corps this year, supposedly going after Garrison. If they lose out on him, don't you think they would take a chance on Martin? Garrison is looking for a 5mil/5year deal., I could see Martin being a fit for the blues, maybe just Martin for Stewart, two players who need a change of scenary. Plus Stewart being an RFA should make it more even seeing the potential upside to him.

Not true. Multiple reports said teams are interested in Martin. Shero just doesn't want to move both Martin/Michalek until he can secure another D-Man in UFA or trade. He was willing to move one of them before acquiring anybody else because he wanted to clear cap room. He just had to decide which one fit the system better/worse. Michalek was the worse fit in their mind. He is slower and can't move the puck nearly as well. Martin is more mobile, better puck mover and at least somewhat capable of handling the uptempo system we play.

I'm not sure that's accurate. Martin was actually very solid in his first season with the Pens. While offensively he wasn't what a lot of Pens fans were hoping, he was great defensively and in the transition game.

It was just this past season where Martin's game seemed to go to crap. I don't know what caused it, but he just wasn't the same player this year as he was last year.

Probably has a lot to do with the fact that the Pens didn't play a structured system at all this year. Last year they did.

Martin would be terrific for Montreal, but the D can't handle his contract without moving Kaberle, I suspect.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't to NYI or Detroit. Both need D, and both have the cap room. It would cost next to nothing, too.

That said, I don't like the idea of selling low on Martin. Seems to be little point to it.

On LI it is not a question of cap room.

It is a question of whether the budget tight Isles, would pay Martin $5m in actual salary to play on the 3rd pairing.

Isles current top 4 of Streit/Vis/Hamonic/MacDonald has the potential to be very solid.

it only makes sense if we do it after FA and get Suter/Parise

My considered opinion being you bought it you keep it. Not sure how many teams will want to give anything for a $5m/year d-man who is best suited as a #3 or 4?

Great Gopher though...I mean all-time great!
