If it's going to be that high there isn't any point of even having the salary cap.

I don't see how small market teams are going to be able to compete with a salary cap more than 70M.

I thought the purpose of a cap was so small market teams could compete and big markets couldn't just throw cash around and buy all the good players. If cap is 70 million plus, why even have a cap?? Seems pretty pointless

So if they have decided on the cap, there shouldn't be any worries about a lockout right?

Summer cap is never a set value; it sounds weird but certain aspects limit it. All they can do during the summer is allow you to go 10% over the Salary Cap of next year.

Certain teams have a lower cap ceiling because of bonuses incurred by ELC players that were deferred until next year. The cap number 70.2 is the set cap amount and teams can go 10% beyond that amount (77~) for the summer before going back down to 70.2

Hope this clears it up.

No the cap is automatically set at this time of the year based off of the current CBA, now we could play under this agreement while they are negotiating if required but thats unlikely.

when they implicated the cap, werent the top teams that needed to be pulled down at around 70?

i know as a canes fan the floor is now pretty well above what was the canes internal budget for years, they have new partial owners and a tv deal that helps but we are right back where we started from.

it would be interesting to see what the budgets of teams were at right before the cap.

Upper limit of salary cap to be $70.2 million
Saying there is an "Upper limit" of a "salary cap" is redundant. The word cap implies "limit". It'd be like saying "The cap of the salary cap".

Based off that wording, I think he is saying that 70.2 million is the highest the cap can be set at. Not that the cap will for sure be 70.2 million.

The cap is simply a mathematical formula on league-wide revenues. To imply that it is getting too high makes no sense. Maybe the calculation needs to be tweaked a little (new CBA, hello), but the cap does not simply get set. There is a percentage of money that goes to the players. The NHL is making more money, so the cap goes up.

From what I understand the exact cap will not be established for 2012-2013 until the CBA is finalized. Is that correct?

So basically every team in the league (except Boston) is at least $8 million (ie. adding a superstar player, if there was one to be had) below the cap? Sure, why not.

The pre-cap era did not have the revenue sharing we have today. Comparing now to then without considering that is inaccurate.

If the cap goes up, it means league revenues are up, which means smaller market teams are getting more money from the Leafs, Habs & Rangers. It's all relative.

yes, because there is a chance the formula might change (at least, that's what the owners want).

70.2 Is what the cap will be if the formula stays the same.

You're wrong.

There is an upper limit and a cap floor, teams must stay within it. $70.2M is apparently the upper limit.

Also, the salary cap wasn't intended to create parity in the league. It was to tie player salaries to league revenue.

The point of the cap is that expenditures on player salaries are directly tied to league revenue.

I think $16 million between cap and floor is too small a percentage now compared to 2005, but that can be adjusted.

They should move to better markets or just stop whining.
