Defensive Trade Targets for Edmonton

Hey guys obviously everyone knows the Oilers defence needs some work, so my question to you guys is what would it take to acquire these players?

Methot
Hjalmarsson
Paul Martin

I think Edmonton is aiming for a more Vancouver style of defense (An entire top 6 of top 4 guys) rather than having a bona fide number 1 and 2.

Adding two guys makes the Oilers defence no longer look so bad. While not world beaters, they're no where near as bad as they have been in the past. No more Barker, Potter, Sutton, or Peckham taking regular shifts makes the defence infinitely better.

Smid - Petry
Martin - N Schultz
Whitney - Methot
Sutton

A few guys I hope the Oilers target in UFA as well are

Sarich
Kubina
Allen
and obviously Justin Schultz

Anyways my question to you guys is what would Edmonton have to give up to acquire Martin, Hjalmarsson and/or Methot?

Please don't include any of the big 4, or Klefbom, or any of Smid, Schultz, Petry. Anyone else is pretty much fair game.

MPS for Martin+ would be a good place to start. Methot for a 2nd+prospect. I don't know if values good but thats what I'd think.

i don't think Shero wants to trade Martin until he signs a more capable replacement since he already traded Michalek for peanuts (although it was as a cap-dump move more than anything else).

Del Zotto + 1st + JT Miller for Taylor Hall.

Edm gets young potential #1 defenseman that can log 25+ mins along with two good pieces in JT Miller, who will add size and grit into the top 6. Rangers get their goal scorer.

Cory Sarich appears to be going to FA, his brother in law Nick Schultz plays defense for the Oilers.

There have been rumors that they may wind up in the same city. (if their wives have any say in the matter)

Alberts can probably be had for peanuts.

Rome is UFA I believe.

We're qualifying Gragnani, but he may be available this season by the deadline.

All lower end guys on the Canucks that would likely show up as a bottom pairing defender on Edmonton, depending on if you need a little size/grit/speed/offense.

This is starting to get really silly with Edmonton wanting D. Lets get one thing straight, the Oilers need a top 4 PMD and not a bottom pairing D. They don't want the big contract or a bad one that could hurt them in re-signings in the future.

Methot- bottom pairing D on the worse D in the league at 3mil cap hit for the next 3yrs.

Hjalmarsson- soft D that will block shots, but only gives out 40-50 hits per year, no offensive skills, some debate if he played 2nd or 3rd pairing, but towards the end of the season he was only getting 16-17mpg. Was also part of the 27th worse PK in the league. 3.5mil cap hit for the next 2yrs

Paul Martin-5mil cap hit for the next 3 yrs, another soft player, little pricey for a D that gets you 25pts each year.

well unless EDM gives up one of its core players, they wont be fetching anyone better.

This thread is started by an EDM fan so bashing these players is not being fair to the fans of their respective teams.

Just an aside, but I don't get this statement. How many true number 1's are there really? Like a half a dozen?

I would think that MPS or Omark for Martin would work. If the Pens move him, it's only because they found someone else.

Shero doesn't need to give Martin away. If he wanted to take his time with Michalek, he easily could have gotten a better return (maybe not a lot, but still). But he wanted to pull the trigger sooner rather than later to free up space for FA's (hopefully Suter and Parise - hey let me dream!).

I can almost guarantee no, I think they moved Johnson because Voynov showed so much promise.

i think the oilers go after and likely sign J.Schultz.
After that i believe Whitney and Hemsky are available.

trade for guys like Tuomo ruutu and McBain in Carolina.
