will we miss Keith Aulie now, and for years to come?

That same Liles who made our powerplay one of the very best in the league prior to getting concussed?

Did you see what Wideman got on his new contract or consider that a disinterested over-rated Kaberle got 4.5 a year last off-season. Locking down Liles at 3.875 looks like a steal compared to those two. Or what Carle is bound to get on July 1st.

I don't think so. Aulie is big, a good skater for his size, not bad defensively, and pretty tough, but he does absolutely nothing with the puck, which more or less limits him to a bottom pairing role. We have ridiculous defensive depth, and a number of players who can fill Aulie's exact role (Komisarek and Holzer play a very similar game, Franson is huge too and better offensively, Phaneuf brings size/physicality with way more offensive and overall ability than Aulie). With Phaneuf, Gardiner, Gunnarsson, Liles, Franson and Komisarek we don't have much room for Aulie in the NHL, and with tonnes of great d prospects like Rielly, Percy, Blacker, Finn and Holzer he would have got even more lost in the shuffle in the future. Aulie is a decent player, but not one we really needed, we cashed him in for a prospect who is less NHL ready, but who has a higher upside, and who potentially will fill more of a team need (power forward with skill).

Wilson put a big leash on him last year and he listed to the coach and got traded for it .
That's quite the run-on sentence you have there.
You're saying Carkner was afraid of Aulie? The same Carkner who fought Boogard? Aulie would get wiped by Orr, don't kid yourself.

We have even less toughness now that Schenn and Aulie are gone. Can you argue that we have more toughness now?
