Anybody seen the episode of Southpark called "Royal Pudding"?

Assuming the cup was stolen, I'd imagine that the events following the theft would happen exactly that episode (except they'd be looking for the cup instead of the princess).

Brief plot overview (from wikipedia):
Quote:
As people all over Canada kill themselves out of despair for the princess' cup's abduction, the Prime Minister of Canada instructs all people of Canadian descent to go home and open their "Box of Faith", which contains - along with a location beacon, a first aid kit, and a sandwich - a video recording issuing a call to arms for all Canadians in fighting condition to "meet by the tree in Edmonton".
Full episode here, if you havn't seen it

If the Stanley Cup gets destroyed the hex is back on and zombie Lord Stanley will rise from his grave and terrorize Great Britain until such time in which he can find transport over to North America and terrorize the hockey community here.

It's been stolen/lost a bunch of times. It's been jacked right out of the Hall of Fame twice. A guy tried to run it out of a game in Chicago one night, and once I think in like the 20's a team forgot it at someones house and his mom turned it into a flower pot for like 2 months before the league found it.

Oh and Guy LaFleur stole it once as well. He just threw it in his trunk and brought it up to his cabin to show his friends and family.

What does the NHL do? Does it create another blank cup that looks exactly like the old one and start filling it in? Does it create another different trophy? Or take one of the old cups out of retirement and use that again?
there are multiple stanley cups at one time

They'd keep it a secret and replace it quickly before anybody gets suspicious of it missing.

They probably have a couple of backup Stanley Cups engraved and made like the current one as a backup contingency plan.

They would just make a new one and nobody would know or care. It's just a copy, anyway.

Duh, dumb question.

Obviously they would just replace it with the most attractive, prestige trophy is sports history, the World Cup trophy!

I wish I had a better source than Wiki Answers but this agrees with what I had read somewhere more authoritative in the past:

Quote:
There are in fact 3 Cups.

1. The original bowl which was donated in 1893 by Lord Stanley of Preston which stays locked in a glass case on display in the vault at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was officially retired and removed from the rest of the trophy in 1963 due to it becoming brittle and compromised over the years.

2. The "Presentation" Cup which is the one which the players skate around with upon winning in the Stanley Cup Finals. This is also the cup which the players get to spend 24 hours with, each and is also the cup which goes on tour to various events/promotions. This is also known as the "Authenticated " Cup.

3. The "Replica Cup" (Produced in 1993) Unlike the "Presentation Cup", this trophy, although is exact in size and weight does not have the same spelling errors on it as the one which is presented every year. It also does not have the official seal of the Hockey Hall of Fame on the bottom. This Cup is put on display when the Presentation cup is out on tour or being awarded.

I love all the 'casual' facts people are putting here that are obviously copy/pasted directly from wikipedia, at least you had resolve to actually quote wiki

Long ago, Lord Stanley's Cup was forged to imprison the soul of a demon that had tried to open a rift between hell and earth. The playoffs determine which team takes on the role of guarding this artifact for one full season. Should the cup be broken and the demon released, the souls of all the guardians of old will rise to fight it.

The cup that was handed to the Kings a couple of weeks ago isn't the original cup. It has been remade several times I believe. They'll just do it again.

While the NHL line was that the replica doesn't have errors and the presentation cup does, people have found new and original errors on the replica cup.

Basil Pocklington's Xed out name is probably the easiest way to tell, short of the seal on the bottom.

Oh, and the real cup is traveling about 300 days a year these days. If you see a cup at the HHoF, assume it's the replica. If you see the cup outside the HHoF, it's always the presentation cup.

As for the OP, assuming a plane crash or something, I would assume they would promote the existing replica cup to presentation duty, and make a new replica. I don't think they would try to go back and make the errors match or anything, it would just become part of the lore.

The other possibility would be building a new cup around salvageable pieces of the old one, maybe making it as a frankencup of the destroyed presentation cup and the replica.

Just once, and that was because the original became too fragile. The original was pure silver, the current one was made with 5% Nickel, which makes it much more durable. The cup gets a lot of wear and tear, after all.
