Alexander Semin to Montréal

At first I thought this would end up being like the Sergei Samsonov experiment all over again. Two enigmatic russians, at the same stage of their career and same age, becoming UFA after disapointing playoffs.

But if I were Marc Bergevin I'd give it a try. He is the only interesting top 6 UFA available that might be willing to sign for the Canadiens. He could come cheap because of his rep, under 5M$ maybe?

I'd have him on the first line with Pacioretty and Desharnais, two hardworkers. Could work.

What you Habs fans thoughts on this?

I read somewhere that his agent is asking for Parise type money true or not I don't think you get him for under 5 mil.

Hmm, player hates dealing with the media, so naturally Montreal would be a good fit.

If you're asking for the opinions of Habs' fans, wouldn't you be better served posting this on the Habs board?

Also: LOL @ under 5 million.

Semin would be stupid to not sign with the Wings & play with the second best Russian center in Datsyuk. Honestly if he doesn't sign with Detroit then I can see him resigning with Washington or going to the KHL & getting a huge payday.

He'd cost at least 5 million... and if he was to sign in Montreal, pretty sure it'd be at a premium. I doubt we'd get him for less than 6 mil. I'd rather pay a few mil more for Parise.

Really not interested in him on the Habs. Actually besides Parise and some other 3rd/4th liner types, there really aren't any UFA's I'd be interested in up front. Parise ain't signin in Montreal so I don't see the Habs getting a top two line winger in free agency.

No way the Habs sign Semin, and no way Semin signes for 5 mill or less and no way a GM out there won't overpay for Semin, so those reasons alone mean Semin ain't comming to Montreal.

Furthermore, Montreal already failed with the Samsonov and Kostitsin experiment, they will not go over that again.

The player I'd love the Habs to sign would be Shane Doan!

Max Pac - Desharnais - Cole
Gionta - Plecs - Doan
Moen - Eller - Bourque

Pretty good top 9 with some size on all lines and worse case you switch Gionta with Moen when things aren't working or they're facing Boston and Philly and need more size on the top 6.

I don't think Doan would want any part of Montreal after the media and some politicos dragged his name through the mud.

Oh nothing that a good marketing plan wouldn't solve. The Habs are kings at that.

As has been mentioned on some of the other threads about Alexander Semin, after the first round of the draft, Renaud Lavoie (RDS) said that he spoke with McPhee and he was told that Semin is looking for a 5 to 7 years contract at 7M per year. Apparently, McPhee also said that he wasn't going to sign him for that much and that's why he traded for Ribeiro.

As a Caps fan who wants to see Semin stay with the team, I don't want to see him stay with at that price AND term. But yeah, teams aren't going to sign him to some bargain 3-year, $5M contract. This is his big payday. If he doesn't stick with the Caps, he will sign with a Russian-friendly team (or the KHL).

In other news, Crosby plans to sign a 10-year contract extension with an annual cap hit of $550,000.
