I'm sure they would rather be without Martin than have the Pens have Parise &/or Semin..
GMs are usually more concerned with improving their own team than keeping other teams from potentially improving on account of cap space.

Why would the GM of, say, the Oilers give two craps about the Pens opening up cap space for a run at FAs if they felt Martin would improve their blueline? Hint: he wouldn't.

Pretty much this. Trades within a division may be rare, but not nonexistent, because you do not want the traded player coming back multiple times a year to bite you in the rear. But not trading for a player who can help you, especially if the team is not in your division, with some convulted reasoning like this? Ridiculous.

Semin's rights are not being traded to Pittsburgh. Zero chance considering that GMGM inquired about Staal and Shero told him he wasn't going to be traded.

They've made a deal already this postseason for Vokoun and the caps asked before staal turned down the 10 year extension. Plus, Staal made it clear he wanted to go to Carolina. Do you think Washington wanted to give up so much for one year of Staal?

I have a feeling he's going to Ottawa. They've taken risks on a few different Russian players in the last few years (Gonchar, Kovalev and Filatov). The latter two didn't work out, but Murray does seem to have a history.

Uh, doesn't Letang's contract expire soon? Along with Crosby and Malkin? Gotta think Shero wants room to resign those guys.

Yeah and not to mention Pens & Caps are rivals. Can't see Semin going there...

Only Letang is gonna see a very significant increase in cap number. Crosby and Malkin already make almost 9 a year. Their numbers arent gonna get much bigger.

And Staal probably either wasn't available at the time WSH asked or was already traded to Carolina. Shero didn't want to trade Staal and told GM's that he wasn't available. Staal wanted to go to the Hurricanes and Shero knew that, Staal's agent said they would negotiate with Carolina if a trade would be made. Rutherford called Shero and asked about Staal and Shero was prepared to move forward with Jordan Staal next year. Then when Rutherford got to Pittsburgh, Shero called him and said he would trade Staal only if it's a hockey deal and Rutherford agreed, went to Shero's office and got the trade done 15 minutes before the draft.

Shero didn't snub GMGM or anything like that, he gave Staal what he wanted, an expanded role on a team with his brother(s). Plus JR gave up quality assets, would Washington give us something similar, and for one year of Staal. No.

By the way, I just typed all that because I want Caps fans to know that Shero didn't lie to GMGM about Staal, he really wasn't available and he made the trade with the Hurricanes because that's where Staal wanted to be and they gave us a good return.

With that said, I agree, I don't think Semin's rights will be traded to Pittsburgh for 2 reasons.

1. Ray Shero said he's not trading for anyone's rights.

2. George McPhee wouldn't give Pittsburgh his UFA rights, all we would give is a draft pick, other teams might give more and maybe he would want to deal those rights to the Western Conference.

This is interesting still not hearing anything on whether Suter is really all that interested in Pittsburgh.

There are also those that believe Suter to Detroit is a virtual certainty at this point. I hope so as a Wings fan.

I am sure Shero who helped draft him and this collection of stars might give him pause. Still believe there is absolutely no way the Pens can resign both Letang and MAF if this happens but I guess you can cross that bridge later.

Think Semin actually is a more logical fit for the Wings than Parise, especially with Howard and Filppula needing to re-up and the possibility that Weber might follow Suter if they grab him as some believe they will.

Yeah, Ovi got $10/year on a much lower cap. I am sure Malkin is going to be content with a $300k bump like many PIT fans posit. Crosby maybe, but Malkin is going to cash in 2 years from now.

Yeah, Malkin is happy in Pittsburgh, and took the same as Crosby last deal. Same agent. So yes, we pretty much expect it.

I will say this....

Semin had a fluke season..a fluke in a bad way. His shooting percentage was 11%
Year before that it was 14.29% and the year before that was 14.39. He's also had a %15.65 and a %14.05. This guys' career average is just over 14%.
Considering how many shots he took last year, he would normally have scored 27 goals instead of 21 or whatever he got last year.

From Eklund (FWIW):

On Alex Semin...

The KHL is still pushing hard, but there are definitely NHL teams who see Semin as a real possibility...The Caps are still in the mix, but right now I am hearing Detroit (e4) and Chicago (e3) as pretty much in a dead heat up front...

Chicago would surprise me and not just because I want Semin in Detroit, but the feeling is he really wants a Russian with him. Then again it is Eklund so the throw stuff at the wall might be happening with Chicago.
