Cam Janssen agrees to a one-year two-way deal (god help us all)

Quote:
Sources say veteran tough guy Cam Janssen has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract to remain with the New Jersey Devils. Sources say the deal will pay Janssen $575/$105.

Last season Janssen totaled 75 penalty minutes while appearing in 48 NHL games. He also had nine fighting majors down from 17 the year before. One of the more popular players with his teammates and the fans, next season will be his 8th in the NHL and 4th with the Devils in two different stints. Expect the official announcement to come soon.

More to come,

Andy Strickland

I was tempted to put the prefix in as "Confirmed with Link" but this isn't an official announcement. Just how reliable is Strickland?

Good lord if this is true.

Meh. Won't see the ice, but great locker room guy. Looks good to me.

I read elsewhere that not many here have a problem with this but if it takes away ice time for the line of Bernier/Carter/Little Gio, I am disappoint.

Eh, let him have a couple of games against the Flyers. He lives off that.

Or, the next time we see Chara and the Bruins

Strickland probably does know Janssen from his St. Louis days and there's really no reason to jump the gun on this so unfortunately I'd say it's true. He'd better be in the minors this time or the thirteenth forward brought out for special occasions only.

It's not taking away their icetime I'm worried about, it's adding to the icetime of Kovy and company that concerns me. Kovy and Elias got run down this year, maybe even Zach to a degree.

If its true its a 2-way deal at almost league minimum it's not that bad he will likely be in the lineup if any of our fourth line suffers an injury or for special occasions.

Towards the end of the season, it looked like Pete was balancing out the added time on his forwards.
It wasn't just Kovy shoved in on the 4th line, but guys like Parise, Zubrus, and even Henrique were getting some extra minutes.

Hopefully, if one of Cam or Boulton has to play... he tries that out again.

I agree. I'm not so much worried we re signed Cam. I'm more worried we re signed Cam, and POS Boulton as of now will still be on the team next year too. Get rid of Boulton. Dude is useless, and cost us games, but didn't help us. With limited ice time every other game you could expect Boulton to either get iced, and pinned in the zone, and be on the ice for a goal against, or take a stupid deflating penalty that is absolutely useless(Like he is) and uncalled for.

That said we do not not under any circumstances need either one dressed most games, and Bernier/Carter/Gio whichever two are lucky to crack the lineup when one of them is in will be absolutely useless when they have to play with one of them. Just as Carter, and Bernier were horrible playing with Boulton, or Janssen all year long.

I wouldn't be opposed to Janssen playing against the Flyers to keep Rinaldo if he has to, or for depth or injury issues with a forward in our lineup. Other than that he or Boulton do not need to crack the lineup every game or even every other game.

Yeah but it was too late in the season at that point. They were even playing Kovy 30+ minutes early in the year, then he got hurt for a few games and they didn't really try that again for the most part, but he still got north of 25 plenty of games when the goon squad was in the lineup.

You're right in that it would help next year to balance out the fourth line shifts from the get go but between the time Kovy gets PK'ing and on the PP, he'd still be up there.

If we can get by with less than 40 games combined from Boulton & Cam, that would be great. Injuries notwithstanding.

Strickland is pretty tapped into the Blues, so I believe him when he said Janssen re-signed.

Cam is a great guy to have around the locker room, even if his on-ice qualities are lacking. glad to see him back.

DeBoer wanted him back so he can dress him and Boulton to start the first game against the Rangers to get back at Torts

No problem with this. I have a feeling Boulton will be bought out. Cam brings a good presence to the 4th for certain games in the regular season. Obviously we should look to renew the Gio/Carter/Bernier line but when we inevitably have injuries, I don't mind Cam going in and laying the boom. He is a momentum changer despite being a bad player.

Geez, I don't get the facination with this guy. If he's so great in the locker room (but can't actually play the sport), can't we just hire him as a "locker room assistant" or something and not waste a roster spot on him?

If they're going to buy out Boulton, needs to be done by Saturday. Unless they're really that cash strapped for a couple hundred thousand dollars (1/3 of his salary), just keep him and let the contract expire.

Cam seems like an awesome dude. Great fighter. Just not such a great hockey player. Sure glad it's a two way contract.

Why does this bother so many people? It's a 1 year, 2 way deal and he's being brought back for his character. He may barely play at all. Either way, this is a loyalty move for what he brings to the team outside of the game.

Glad you're back Cam!
