He's too important to the history of the team to sit out games he can still call. There will be pleanty of time to groom a replacement once he's retired. Until then, let's enjoy what's left of RJ. Mistakes here and there are fine. I'm watching, I can see what's going on. All I need him there for are the goal calls and he still delivers on those

“Having RJ return to call a full schedule of games next season is great news for our organization and even better news for our fans,” team President Ted Black said today. “We are so lucky to have a Hall-of-Fame talent around on a full-time basis again and, after his new contract extension, for years to come on our broadcasts."

Great news!

I'd say Rick should do 2 more years after this and then retire.By then, we should have found our future pbp guy who is qualified enough to replace a legend and possibly the greatest hockey announcer ever.

Color me surprised! I thought it was no chance that he would call the west coast games.

This is exactly it. He's definitely not the RJ of his glory days but there isn't exactly a lot of standout NHL play by play guys so I'll take a declining legend who's our legend over most NHL announcers.

Love this. But I really hope Ted Black and co. put time into finding a good successor soon. i wouldn't mind if, after this year, they found someone and simply started working him in so rj could take breaks during west coast trips and back to back games. and then that person could hopefully take over full time eventually.
with that being said, Buffalo better win the whole damn thing while he's still around.
also, why rj is a ****ing legend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA0ROuX2DEI

Lost a step? Sure
Eyes going? Who's aren't.

But I really really dread not being able to have a fire going in the dead of winter and pop on the Sabres game, and not hear RJ's voice....

And for most of the game it doesn't even matter what he's saying... I can follow the game. That's what i don't get about his detractors... If its Leino and he says Boyes I know it's Leino....AND its not going to amount to much anyway....

But the gems.... The goals... That's why he's still around.

And for the first time since 2005-06, he’ll be behind the microphone for all 82 games — and, as he predicts, the playoffs.

“I spent a lot of time sitting at home (last season),” Jeanneret said in a phone interview. “The time I spent in Florida, twice for a couple of weeks, was fine. That wasn’t an issue. There were a couple of games I sat and watched that I should have been at. It stuck in my mind I should take another run at it. If I’m going to make a run at it, I might as well try it on for size.”

Jeanneret missed only two games during his first 35 years with the Sabres. He started taking in-season vacations in 2006-07 when the team went on long road trips.

In 2010-11 and 2011-12, Buffalo had the most sets of back-to-back games in the NHL (22 and 21, respectively). Travel forced Jeanneret to miss 23 games last season.
Quote:
Jeanneret is still year-to-year with the Sabres, who missed the playoffs last season with 89 points, three back of the eighth-place Ottawa Senators. Jeanneret believes this year’s team, which includes youngsters Cody Hodgson and Tyler Myers, and a veteran core of Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek, Drew Stafford and Jason Pominville, will make the post-season.

“If I didn’t think so I’d have to rethink my decision,” he said. “You get so close and you don’t make it. It was the last week and they were out of the playoffs. That hurts. I really feel they will be a better team.”

Colourful owner Terry Pegula continues to put money into the team, both on and off the ice. Jeanneret said the First Niagara Centre press box is scheduled for renovations this season. Any changes will outlast Jeanneret’s remaining time in the booth.

I hope Pegula is stocking up on those seat cushions that RJ so enjoys!

Jeanneret had already planned to do more games than last year, but the release of the schedule last week made him decide to go all in. The Sabres are playing on back-to-back nights a franchise-low 11 times, so the city-to-city grind won't be as arduous.

"I thought about it for quite awhile," Jeanneret said by phone. "When I looked at it, I thought maybe this year I'll just take out the West Coast and I'll do all the rest of them. And then when I started to put everything together, I said, 'What the heck. In for a penny, in for a pound.' I'm going to be here, I may as well do them all.

"There are other things, too, that came into play. I've been feeling pretty good. I'm going to miss the trips to Florida, but I'm not going to miss sitting around the house not doing any games, which happened on a couple of occasions.

"The other thing that impacts it is I think we're going to be pretty darn good this year. I really do. I thought there was some promise last year, and with the maturation of the team alone it should be better. I know they're going to do something else before the free agency period has totally passed by. I'm looking forward to that as well. That of course, as you well know, makes the season a lot shorter when things are going well."
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sa...ece?sabrespace

Optimistic speculation from RJ or fact based on something Black promised the Sabres would do?

Inquiring minds want to know....
