Normally yes, but with him being a RHD which NY needs BAD .... that is not a problem. RHD is what they lack.
I agree and feel any team could fit him into their d-corps if he was signed. However from his perspective and as a rookie looking at Staal, Girardi, Del Zotto, McDonagh, it could be very intimidating considering one of his top priorities is ice time. Not to mention if he was promised top 4 ice time, his mistakes as a rookie could cost him minutes with guys like that behind him. I think as a D-man looking for ice time you pick Vancouver over NY.
If you're Schultz, you probably know the history of the Canucks and the passion that Canucks fans have for hockey. The Canucks have never had a true #1 defenseman. If you're Schultz, imagine becoming that #1 defenseman in a few years. Imagine hoisting the Cup over your head for your hometown team in front of your family that has been fans of the team for quite a while. Imagine lifting the Cup over your head and becoming a hero to your hometown province for bringing the Cup to Vancouver. If winning the Cup is the ultimate satisfaction, winning the Cup for your hometown franchise that never has and being one of the keys to that win just makes winning all the more sweeter. No other franchise offers the opportunity for Schultz to become a franchise legend and hometown hero.
I wonder if Gillis put on the lucky underwear he wore to sign Mats Sundin before going into that meeting today
How much luck do you need when you offer a guy 10 million a year?
The biggest issue for the Win now teams (we all know who they are) is the probability of Schultz winding up in the minors if he struggles (and he will struggle, he is a rookie after all).
Won't make very much in the way of salary or bonuses down there, not to mention the embarrassment of winding up riding the bus in the minors after the media hooplah.

The canucks have had a #1 defenceman....ed jovanoski.
never knew Schultz parrents were Canucks season ticket holders. The must be HUGE fans to be ticket holders living in Kelowna.
Would you do a 4hr(each way)drive from Kelowna to Vancouver 41x a year? Jason Gregor from the fan 1260 in Edmonton first tweeted this. He's not very well connected with the Oilers so I have my suspicions in regards to his Canucks contacts

maybe they have a house in Vancouver where they could still here a couple weeks here and there to watch some games.

Both Ohlund and Jovo were legit #1 dman in their prime. Both played huge minutes on one of the top d-units in the league playing in every situation. How were they not "true #1"??
Having watched the Canucks religiously since the 70's, I still maintain Ohlund - in his prime - was the franchise's best ever dman.

What would it say about the city if he choses to sign with another club.
IMO signing with your hometown is great. Cant understand why guys shy away from it. Lupul, JBo etc come to mind from EDM. Certainly another checkmark in favor of VAN

Nothing like reasonable expectations for this kid eh?

Lupul didn't refuse to re-sign in Edm he was traded away. He didn't play well there tho.

Pressure?
How many Ontario born kids have signed in Toronto when UFAs? Why didn't Kariya come to Vancouver when they were begging for him?
It happens.

Perhaps I should get your definition of what true #1 means before I respond.
I agree that Ohlund was the best of what Ive seen. I was not around for the 70s so you'll have to count me out of that discussion.

Being realistic?? The Canucks are in their window of opportunity now, it will have passed by the time this kid has gotten over his sophmore slump :p
This angle is the one advantage Vancouver has. If he signs there, it was likely always his first choice.

Maybe your odds improve if you have a good team. IIRC both Kariya and Selanne signed with a good Colorado team to win a Cup. I think that if Toronto ices a good team they would attract more Ontario players as would Montreal in the case of Quebec kids.
