I highly doubt he's trolling for an offer sheet. He loves Colorado. Not to mention just a few days ago Strickland has reported that negotiations for EJ and Colorado were going smoothly.
I think you missed the point...as far as anyone can figure, he is allowed to sign right now. The claim that, as per the CBA, he has to wait until July 1 is what has everyone confused...
I guess the question, then, is what makes this news-worthy--as opposed to every other RFA?
Maybe some Avs fans can help out the rest of us? Is there something particularly significant about the delay?
No there isn't, the talks between EJ and Avs FO are going along smoothly according to reports. If anyone thinks Sherman will let EJ walk he's out to lunch, his entire career as a GM will be judged by the EJ trade.

it's basically trying to make something out of nothing. Avs fans all know that Sherman takes his time with contracts. When we had Stewart, he wasn't signed until the beginning of fall and the same with mueller.
And I dare a team trying to sign an offer sheet to our RFAs.
Also there is no way flyers will be getting EJ, unless grioux is coming back and I highly doubt both teams would be willing to do that.

Strickland just likes to talk about EJ?
I'm guessing he has a good relationship with him from his days with the Blues or maybe he has a source close to him. That's why he has mentioned his contract negotiations a couple of times now. Before he said talks were going well.
Probably one of the few guys Strickland can actually get some legit information from so he put it out there. Although, what he said about EJ not re-signing until July 1st because of a rule isn't really breaking news.
This is what Strickland said on Tuesday:

Negotiations between Erik Johnson and Colorado are going smoothly.
So I doubt he's just waiting for an offersheet from another team.
Well, I think it's pretty damn unlikely Philly does, but even then I don't know if I would. Giroux is a brilliant player but we have awesome center depth, and no one immediately ready to replace Johnson. I don't know if the goals Giroux can score for us would really be worth the number that would be going the other way in the absence of EJ.
Erik Johnson will be a Flyer. Write it down in Sharpie.
Just out of curiosity...what makes you so certain he will?
It's as if all of the things that Avalanche fans have been saying go in one ear and out the other around here in regards to EJ. Sherman paid a big price to get him, the Avs value him very highly, and are not about to let him go without having someone of similar talent/potential in place.
And right now the Avs don't have that in anyone other than EJ.
As a Flyers fan, I have no idea why he's so certain--it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
The best assets the Flyers have are at the Avs deepest position--center--and while Johnson might still develop into the top-tier NHL defenseman he was projected to become, he's not, currently, a clear upgrade on the Flyers top-4 (Timonen, Coburn, Grossmann, Schenn, and Mezsaros--plus possibly Carle).
I guess one of them would be going the other way in a deal, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me...

EJ would be a pretty clear upgrade on everyone but Coburn and Timonen. And I'd say he's better than both at this point.
Johnson has the rare ability to dictate the tempo of the game. Something we've lacked without Pronger. He would be the perfect guy to shore up our defensive core.
It's also the same reason why Colorado will absolutely not let him go, and he wont be a Flyer...

I can't. My Sharpie is a permanent marker and I can't erase the kings ransom of a return Van Riemsdyk was supposed to bring back the last time I used my Sharpie.

Johnson is a better all-around player than Mez, Grossmann, or Carle. He's better offensively than Coburn, but I don't think he's the same caliber in his own end quite yet. Timonen is tough to judge.
Still, my point was that it wouldn't make sense for the Flyers to give up one of them plus another significant asset for the upgrade.
Assume, for example, that Coburn has to go back--since he's the most valuable of the bunch. Adding a roster player (e.g., a young forward) to Coburn to get Johnson just makes no sense for the Flyers--and it only gets worse if you assume Coburn is off-limits and Mezsaros goes the other way.

There's nothing on the Flyers roster that would force Colorado to trade EJ outside of Giroux and we know that won't happen.
