Peter Chiarelli and Co. are probably fidgeting in their seats if Rask only wants to sign a one year deal. Hopefully for the Bruins' sake Rask realizes that it's his time now, that he's their man and in net, and signs a multi-year deal.
Otherwise, Boston may find themselves in the Luongo sweepstakes.
one year makes a lot of sense for the player... backups even when they are super promising cant command big money... starters even when they are mediocre do.
when you look at comparables... rask cant point to anyone and say that guy got more then 4 mill with my type of resume. in fact, most guys with rasks type of resume get less then 3 mill
so boston would probably love to sign rask to a long term deal.... but not at anything close to the money rask will command after he has had a successful season with 50+ starts.
I think boston is going to try to get at least 2 years at backup money... thats like price and varlemov and quick and other highly reguarded kids had to sign before they were handed the keys to the kingdom in their cities... but to avoid a bitter contract battle, they might back off that position and agree to just 1 year.
as for rask, im sure that the idea of security is appealing but not if hes going to be leaving 2+ mill on the table for every year signed. The winnipeg deal shows that even mediocre starters with very average numbers are going to get long term deals at 4 mill and plus in todays marketplace.
if rask wanted a long term deal today... about 4 mill would likely be the top he could ask for and have any comparables to even begin to back his request up with. but if rask does his long term deal in a year or two then 5+ is what teams give highly reguarded starters
there is just way too much money lost if the current deal is for multiyears... so give eklund props on this one. Ive been predicting a 2 year but only because i didnt think the team would budge from its position.
I dont think that Chiarelli is sold on Rask yet. This will be his first season as a starter so i wouldnt commit to a longterm big money contract. He has shown what he can do but still, the team had troubles winning with Rask in net last season.
Its in no way a guarantee that Rask can handle the #1 duties like Thomas can and the Bruins want great goaltending. Chiarelli is probably looking at 1-prove me wrong year and then wants to lock him up.
