Mainly because come FA they go for the money rather than the opportunity to win a cup. There are a few notable exceptions though, such as Hossa.

Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - _______
Ballard - Tanev
Alberts
But will AV knowing that there's a small window to win a Cup allow Schultz the time to grow, and make mistakes along the way? He certainly wasn't with Cody Hodgson

That's a pretty funny sentiment actually. That's like banishing someone from Detroit to Southern California.

No offence RW fans but your city isn't the best to reside in despite the great hockey team.

He's subconciously going in order of preference. Oilers, NYR, and next maybe VAN.

Makes sense.

Still, I guess there's still some competition for him there. More guys knocking on the door if he falters.

I just mentioned the window closing argument because people are saying the Canucks are an organization on the decline, implying they'll be crappy in a few years, not just that they won't be Cup contenders.

Lots... But theres an even longer list of players who busted long before that because they weren't focused on the steps it takes to get there and doing the little things right along the way.. Schultz should be more focused on making the NHL... Right now he's a very unknown commodity and may never even become an NHL regular...

Make the show first... Then worry about winning... He can choose his team at 27.. If hes half as good as some make him out to be, I'm sure he'll have plenty of interest then.

Here's my sales pitch if I'm Bryan Murray:

Ottawa:
-young team on the rise
-offensive system: more points: higher second contract
-play with EK on PP = more points
-look how well we develop defensemen: EK, Cowen coming along too
-opportunity for big role: Kuba not resigned, if we sign you we won't replace Kuba with a vet

Here's how I'd knock down the other teams:

Vancouver
(tough to do, I think Schultz signs with them)
-team has peaked, in decline
-many vet defensemen in depth chart to pass

NYR
-a young top 4 already set, will be tough for Schultz to pass any of these guys
-defensive system = less points = lower 2nd contract

Detroit
-team of the past, in decline
-big preference for playing vets over kids

Edmonton
-how many of the young guns will want out at first opportunity?
-organization a joke / shambles: last place 3 years in a row

Toronto
-less points in Carlyle's defensive system = lower 2nd contract
-look at how they mis-developed Schenn compared to the Sens with Karlsson
-7 years no playoffs, spinning their wheels

The window IS closing, I don't see how you can't see that. But yes, like for the other 29 teams, acquiring the right players can change the direction. Problem is, once Schultz is matured and developed, the Canucks team could very well be long past it's prime and end up in a situation similar to Calgary and they only took 3-4 years to become stale.

#1 rule of negotiating is you don't bash your competition. Stay professional, and sell the benefits that you have to offer. People arent stupid, and I'm sure his agents already have told him that.

Sounds like the other way around - talk to the teams where talking is all you do.. Leaving the team you're going to sign with for last.

Didn't the same agency which reps him now do the same thing with Richards last year? Talk to all the teams they weren't going to sign with first (like Toronto) and the talk and sign with the Rangers last?

This situation is putting huge expectations on Schultz, no matter where he signs... Everyone will expect the moon and if he doesn't deliver I can imagine some fans being pretty disappointed...
