Wideman deal most likely just pushed Carle away. Most are now assuming he will be making 5.5-6.0 mil a year. Thought it was a good thread to have since he is arguebly one of the top UFA d-men available.

I'm not a big fan of his, but I think he'll sign in Denver.

Yeah, one would have to think that he'll get more than Wideman and probably more term as well.

I pity the team that signs him during free agency.

Anyone who believed Holmgren's assertion that Carle's deal was in place and that it would be announced July 1 was seriously misguided. That was furthered confirmed when Schenn was acquired. Doubt Wideman has anything to do with it.

After Colorado re-signed Hunwick and O'Brien, I am not sure they will be willing to spend the $$ it will take to sign Carle. The Avs have six experienced NHL defensemen and young prospects like Barrie, Elliott, and Gaunce vying for NHL time as well.

Out of curiosity what makes him worth more than Wideman? There's 100 Matt Carle's in the NHL.

Hunwick and O'Brien are #6 and #7, Wilson will probably play with SOB and Elliott and Barrie are RH. We still need someone to play with EJ.

None of which should be playing on the top pair. You forget Quincey was traded, so Carle could very well be brought in, he may not be the best Dman out there but he would at least make the Avs defenders fall into their right position on the depth chart.

Our current d-core is horrible, there is no way the Avs aren't going to get somebody this off-season.

Holmgren never said that. He said he was optimistic that he could sign Carle. I believe it was Dustin Leed who was telling everyone Carle signed.

I think Tampa will throw him an offer. 5.5-6 million probably not, more along the lines of 4-4.8 seems like what Yzerman would do.

Most Flyers fans would be okay with around 4.75 mil at the max. He's not a bad d man just was relied on too heavily last year. He played great when he was with Pronger. Too bad well never see that again.

Max contract, on average on our board, was around 4.6 mil or so. The "rumored" deal was for around 4.4. I doubt he signs for less than 5 mil now with the latest contracts being thrown around.

Arguable. Wideman and Carle are certainly comparable.

My take on Carle, and I feel I speak for most Flyers fans-- he is a #4 defender at best. He is not bad, but the fact is, he frustrates you with less than stellar offensive ability, and the all too frequent brain fart in the D zone.

But when it comes down to it, Carle is a player who can eat a lot of minutes, and will put up 40ish points a year. So even though you'll hate him at times, at the end of the year, you wont be mad that he was on your team.

However-- that is the general view of Carle at $3.5m. Most fans will not go a penny above $4.5m to re-sign him. Unfortunately, he very realistically will command 5+ on the market, so one team will walk away with Matt Carle, but will be extremely disappointed given the price that they will pay.

I hope Carle doesn't test the free agency waters. I hope he dives in headfirst.
