He was unrestricted. Lombardi wanted him back. He had a bad regular season last year, but if he has a normal year, he should give the Kings 10-15 goals, 35ish points, and win faceoffs. That's about as good as you can realistically expect for a 3rd line center.
Last year, Stoll went from the 2nd center to the 3rd center, and his wingers were question marks going into the season. Give him some wingers that can do something, and Stoll will be better.
Unrestricted free agency is silly season. Stoll took less money to stay, so he gets 3 years because Lombardi wanted him back.
And if the Kings re-sign Penner, Stoll will have Gagne or Penner on his wing for most of the season, along with Lewis. That's not a bad third line. When Penner and/or Gagne get injured, King can slide back to the third line. The Kings third line should be strong all season. Much better than Hunter or Moreau on his wing.

My only problem with signing Stoll is that doing so creates a log jam at similar players who are ready down on the farm both this season and the next few. It is a good problem to have and if any kid steps up huge (more so then Lewis Nolan Vey Loktionov etc) then we will always have the option of moving Stoll or any of them as well but it still creates the jam.
Does anyone know how much cap room we have left for next year assuming that new 70 mil cap is true? After/If we sign Penner we still have to sign King. After that I'm curious to see if we have more than 6 mil left or not. (I'm guessing with the two above guys signed, we have about 5 mil...not enough for any of the big three UFAs. We may get .5 mil back after dealing JB and replacing him with a goalie that makes the minimum. Parse's 1 mil comes off too.

Kings still have $11.8 million available for next season with 22 roster players signed. King is the only other player that needs a new contract, but the won't get much of a raise from last year. Quick's cap hit is still $1.8 million for next season, his extension doesn't kick in until 2013-14.
Clifford probably goes to Manchester or Westgarth is waived to make room for King and Penner on the 23 man roster.
The temporary summer cap is over $77 million (you are allowed to go over by 10% during the off season), if Dean somehow signs Parise, then Gagne would probably be traded or waived to make room. That is an additional $3.5 million.

Have you checked out capgeek.com?
They have all of the numbers and are typically up to date.

We are in the best shape cap wise of any Stanley Cup Champion in the Cap era.
And I think many GMs would argue we are in good shape cap wise with the players that are signed going well into the future.
With so many teams having cap space right now, I think UFA's are going to be extra pricey this year. Resigning Penner on the cheap might be a wise decision.

They're not going to waive or trade Gagne, and the cap is 70.2M as agreed upon but it will still probably lower come the new CBA.

Agree on the waive part. They might trade him if they get the right UFA. I still think our best case is Gagne retiring taking that money and signing Penner. Yes 3.5 would be an over-payment so maybe would could get 3.25, 3 would be better. Then make the run at Parise and hope we could land him for less than 7 cap hit 6-6.5 would be ideal. That would leave us with almost 6 mil at the deadline for a deal.

I just don't see them trading Gagne, he's got a relationship with a bunch of people in the organization, it's only one more year on his deal, let him finish it out.

If they get the right UFA and he is the odd man out sadly business is business. And with his injury history you would have to think if they get the LW and Penner signs he would be the odd man out. I like Gagne I just wish he could stay healthy.
I don't see why management would let him negotiate like that. He had a bad regular season, I think he shouldn't of been in a position to do that.
It's give and take. You want a lower cap hit, add a year. Besides that, everyone pretty much except Quick had a bad regular season. Everyone, Stoll included, played great in the playoffs.
At this point I am hoping we get Penner resigned, I'd even go more then the 2 year max most people here want, if it brings down the cap hit. Honestly at this point it just makes sense. Penner has a lot of talent, finished strong, is durable, and could potentially put up a 30 goal season in the next couple years. Unlikeley sure, but I wouldnt be surprised at all if only Kopi, Carter and Brown finished ahead of him in goal scoring next year.
So far I like how Lombardi seems to be trying to keep a group like this together. The Hawks imploded right after they won the cup and haven't been the same since.

They had to because of their terrible cap management. They took their one shot and scored a Cup, I think their fans felt that it was worth it.
They still have a good core of forwards, just need a goalie and a defenseman or two.
