Makes lots of sense. Well, at least he's good at faceoffs.

Betts is likely to never play again.

Odd, he's kinda tough. Tougher than Darche. Has about the same offensive capabilities. He's younger, he can win faceoffs. Meh, like others said, 13th forward.

Darche as the 13th would have been more okay for me. Would be disappointed if he'd be our official 4th line center.

LOL, yah, I guess Therrien and Bergevin will bring a true bottom 6 now. Toughness aside, the guy can't even be a checking line center or provide any reasonable energy. 13th forward, sure, anything else? meh.

Habs are his 4th team. 12th, 13th forwards tend to bounce around a bit. I don't understand the issue here. He's decent centerman for the 4th line. Hell, he's better at faceoffs than anyone on the team.

Yeah, I just realized that. Now I'm confused.

Actually no, it is cheaper. If a player makes less than $660K, the team who qualifies him must give him a 10% raise thus bringing his salary to $605K as opposed to $575K.

It is weird...

he was making $550,000 last year.....

So Habs don't give him a Q, then resigned him for $575.000

I tell ya Gauthier is still here in a closet somewhere.

So much overreaction over this signing...

We can still sign an actual great awesome 4th line center. If we are unable to (probably because 15 teams are going to call Gaustad and he'll be gone for something ridiculous like 3m$) then we won't have to spend draft picks or rush a prospect to have a 4th line center that can take faceoffs.

He signed 1 year at league minimum salary, there is no risk whatsoever.

EDIT : With Eller, Desharnais&Plekanec all able to play 15 to 20 minutes Nokelainen might have very low ice time per game.

Maybe they actually thought Darche would take a 2 way deal and this was the backup plan?

I'm telling you!! Our intentions were to let him walk, until Engqvist fled to Russia. Hence letting him go unqualified, then signing him.

Why doesn't anybody listen to me.

I believe the qualifying offer for players earning under $1 million has to be 10% more than what they currently make

Not 100% sure

550,000 * 110% = 605,000

I'm very OK with this signing. 26yrs old. RH shot, can play all three forward positions. This is the kind of depth player this team needs. At 26, he still has time to have a chance at that "career year" if only for one season. Darche being 36yrs old, n his game was only headed in one direction & it wasn't towards a possible "career year".

A good move IMO.
