Wideman's a fine pickup, but I'm a little dissatisfied with his cap hit. Something closer to Gio's would be more reasonable, in my view.
Its pretty reasonable considering the salary cap increase and the demand certain players will want in free agency.
This is a very solid signing for the Flames. I dislike the 5 years though. 3 years would have been the best bet for him, but if the Flames trust him to play that well then by all means...

Yea with the cap at 70.2 million Wideman's cap% is 7.48% compared to
Mark Streit in 2008-2009 signed a 5 year deal at 4.1 mil a year after a 62 point season (in a much higher scoring season) or a percent of 7.23%
Mark Giordano in 2011-2012 signed a 5 year deal at 4.02 mil a year after a 43 point year for a cap percent of 6.25% (nice home town discount)
Dustin Byfuglien in 2011-2012 signed a 5 year deal at 5.2 mil a year after a 53 point year for a cap percent of 8.09%
Wideman's contract is a bit of overpayment versus pervious ufa defenseman but he was the only RH defenseman available.
I see Wideman replacing Sarich's $3.6 million. A $1.65 million increase in one lineup spot (filling a couple of needs no less) is not a bad use of cap space, at least in my opinion.

Yea, I don't doubt Wideman's talents and with guys like Garrison and Carle wanting 5.5, it will get pretty ridiculous. Sign a proven veteran that will help you immediately and also gives you time for prospects/young college signings to come along.

Pretty good way to look at it. My god people whine and ***** about cap hits like it's their ****ing money
I must be the only person who has no trouble with this signing.
Of the when the Flames sign him it's like the most terrible signing ever. Some other team signs him for the same price on July 1st and it's all "Oh he's a good player, a little overpriced because of the market, but a nice edition their blueline nonetheless" blah blah blah. Whatever. Bouwmeester might be on the way out, we need more puck moving defensemen, and we need a right handed shot as well because I think Babchuk was our only one. He's a good fit.
Part of the reason this contract is made to sound so ridiculous is, well Calgary signed him. Can't wait to see what Carle gets.
it's not that Calgary signed him per se, the first free agency moves get pillared every year because they seem so big, until more guys get signed, and people realize FA prices go up every year.
I don't have a problem with the move per say but I don't understand the direction of the franchise. They are not building a championship contender nor are they rebuilding, they are just making moves for the sake of making moves. Although Edmonton has sucked and acquired #1 for the last three years you can see the direction the team is headed. Their young prospects are playing extremely well, they are lacking a defensive presence and goaltenders but their future is extremely bright. Give them a couple years and they will be contenders.
Calgary on the other hand needs everyone. They are such a confusing franchise. Put it this way, God forbid but what if Jarome Iginla and Kipper retired before the upcoming season what do you now think of the Calgary Flames now? We're absolutely horrible, and our prospects are just okay, no depth. This is why Flames fan especially me are so tough on Feaster because what is he really doing to improve the team. (Yeah I'm a very passionate Flames fan if you can't tell lool.)

I don't consider this a move for the sake of making a move.
Weakness - point production from the blue line.
Solution - Dennis Wideman
Wides was my favorite defenseman when he was on the Bruins.
His last season in Boston was tough for him because he was playing hurt (and some stupid fans would boo him). He was great in the playoffs and I was sad to see him go.
Dennis seems like a nice guy and was well liked by team mates ( I sit next to the bench in Boston and you can tell).
You are paying Wides so big $$$ . I hope he works out well for you.
Good luck Dennis ! I am still a fan and wish you well
I do like all the hate flames got for a point producing dman, and it was made clear by everyone how bad of contract, money and length wise it was... nucks sign a guy for longer and pretty simular money (bigger overall contract) who rides the coattails of Campbell in Fla... And yet everyone loves the signing. Life of being a flames fan.
That is speculation there is no proof to that at all.
Feaster is currently shopping Jay Bo. He will really control his destination whether he gets what he wants for him we'll have to wait and find out. After Suter signs expect the interest to pick up.

Based on what? Only Feaster and management staff know.
