Most underrated defenseman in hockey?

Great signing! Look at this player usage chart. Top left and big blue circle=good.

Good luck from the Kings!

Great signing. Anyone know if this makes him a UFA at the end of the deal? Seems like the term gives him a couple years to prove he's a top 4 guy and possibly have an even bigger payoff on the next deal. Also very moveable if guys like Madaisky, Savard, Goulobef, Weber, make strides to push for the big club. Could be a steal by year 2. I hope so.

Yes, I believe I read that he'll be unrestricted after this contract.

Count me in on the approval of this. Term and year.

This signing might be the most popular among the majority of posters in CBJ HFboard history.

Just read the CBJ article and the 2nd year of the deal would be Nik's first year as a UFA. So a good year this year and look for an extension next July. Likely some movement of the other pieces as well if he continues to excel.

I'm really liking the present and future D potential we're putting together.

Thus only a page and a half of posts.

It will get a bump later on if he starts to suck. Then the flame wars will drive up traffic.

Damn, a sensible contract by Howson I'm totally good with this signing. Guess he's learning his lesson about signing insane contract lengths and terms.

Of course, this also means that all of us will be complaining about Howson's "lack of foresight" or whatever when Nikitin becomes a UFA in 2014

Two million a year? What a bargain! Get it done, Howson.

It's too bad that Howson has jumped the gun on so many contracts (Umberger, Mason, Tyutin).

Nikitin seems solid enough to warrant a longer term deal.

Glad he is signed, but term is probably right, given he has about a single half year of good production. Any more than that and this site would be screaming about locking up an unproven for too long.

Glad he's here, and hope he earns a big contract next go around.

Just curious, wouldn't giving Nikitin a longer term deal been jumping the gun? Two years seems appropriate for both sides.

Even on the mains this is a universally beloved contract extension with like zero dissent.

I didn't wanna go all the way and say that, but...

Yeah. This is too good to be true. All the good feelings will go out the window at 12:01 on Sunday when Howson forgets his meds or something.

This is proof that one of the 4 horsemen has been set loose upon the Earth.

In all seriousness, we're pretty well insulated with this deal. Even if he falls flat on his face, the contract isn't prohibitive. As far as Howson finding another way to screw up after signing what appears to be an excellent contract.... I have faith that Howson will find a way to maintain is level of consistency with the roster.

I think 3 of our top 4 defenseman are now on good/reasonable contracts. I do think Wiz is a bit overpaid but I'm hoping year #2 takes care of the challenges of year #1 (he did actually produce points are a good PPG though). Maybe his trajectory is the anti Commodore (good year #1, than progressively worse). Given what Wideman got, what Carle will get and what Green will good (all somewhat comparable?) I think Wiz somewhat falls in line. especially if he gets back to being a 50+pt d-man and reasonable in his own zone with leadership on the ice and in the lockerroom.

The only contract that bothers me a bit is Methot. Mostly because it's an escallating contract (not necessarily a horrendous cap hit - not good by any means).
