Good news on Gaustad if you ask me. That means Poile wasn't willing to overpay for him. I'm sure whoever signs him as a FA will be happy to pay extra, but he's only a 4th liner for us. Just not a good fit long term.

Fisher, Legwand, Spaling, Gaustad... that just screams mediocrity to me. Ideally I'd want...

XXX
Fisher
Legwand
Spaling

Obviously filling in XXX is easier said than done, but I'd rather have hope. Who knows, maybe Craig Smith will surprise us.

Can't imagine Poile is interested in selling Wilson for downgrades. If he's traded, it's either for a lateral move, or in a package for an upgrade. If I'm wrong, then I'll be very disappointed.

It's not a bad offer though, if we're forced to trade him.

Mentioning Nashville doesn't get people excited. It doesn't equal website hits or twitter followers.

We never are.

We were surprise winners for Lombardi, Arnott, Kariya........

If a media clown says that Toronto is interested in someone - big hits. If Nashville is interested in someone - not so many.

Don't know about Arnott or Kariya signings. Won't comment on that.

In regards of Lombardi, yes we were mentions all around and was the front runners...

That's easy - XXX should be Olli Jokinen.

He's not a true #1C in terms of the NHL, but he's the best one out there, won't cost a fortune, allows us to slot Legwand/Fisher into their proper slots at #2/#3 centers. He's durable, played 79 and 82 games the last 2 years, plays on the power play, can be adequate defensively.

If Suter leaves, I'd sign Jokinen, go out and get someone like Bryan Allen to play that #2/#3 Dman (insurance in case Josi gets hurt, falters a little).

That's a team that should be better offensively, and while there's no replacing Suter, should still be a quality defensive team.

Sarich re-up in Calgary with a mirror of the Gill contract. 2 years, 2 mil per.

Calgary now has TEN defenseman on 1 way contracts. JayBo has to go, right?

There we go. JayBo and Jokinen. Suter doesn't exactly have to be replaced with a top tier Dman. I think we'll still be okay in that aspect. We should always be looking for another center though and scoring.

I always liked Bouwmeester's game. He's hasn't been as good in Calgary as he was in Florida though, and he's signed to a horrific contract - 6.67 for 2 more years.

A change of scenery might do him good, and not having to play the #1 might help. He can definately play that #2 D-man role for us (Josi's durability scares me), and the $$$$'s shouldn't be a concern considering we'll have to spend a fortune to get to the floor.

Calgary probably wants to unload that contract and he might be had for peanuts (maybe a Blum+middling pick).

Weber -Bouwmeester
Josi - Klein
Ellis - Gill
Ekholm

It also helps us meet the floor if we have to trade Weber this summer and blow the whole thing up.

Despite the JBO playoff curse, he's a guy I wouldn't mind getting at all for the right price. He's expensive, but if Suter goes and we miss out of Parise/Doan/Whitney, money won't be a problem.

Really? Kulemin had 1 good year but didn't he have a pretty bad season last year? Kulemin is soft too from what very little I've seen.

J-Bow & Klein sounds like a pretty good 2nd pairing.

If Suter leaves, Weber-JBo sounds like an acceptable first pairing.

I think Suter ends up in Pittsburgh if he doesn't end up back here. If that happens I think Shero calls Poile and offers up Martin for a mid round draft pick to alleviate their salary issues and gives us someone to fill minutes on the blue line at a reasonable cost.

If we're going to cough up 5 sheets for Martin, I would rather see us fork the extra 1.5 for Bouwmeester. Both are overpaid, but Bouwmeester is considerably better and isn't Coming off a whipping boy season like Martin is.

Bouwmeester is an ok defenseman, but not worth his contract, and is pretty soft, both physically and mentally. Martin has been unimpressive in Pittsburgh, but being a product of the Devils system, is probably a much better fit under Trotz.
