Salo is positionally the best dman on the Canucks. He makes smart reads and is always in the right place. I think Salo is definitely a top 4 and I think he will play in our top 4 next year regardless of anything else we do.
I hope not. The Canucks, IMHO, really need to add a player who is defensively sound and can bring a physical element to their top 4 while being able to play 21-23 solid consistent minutes. I think the Canucks currently have only 3 top-4 defensemen, and it hurt us in the playoffs.
Garrision would be an ideal addition.
I think the team is best served by having Salo rotating with Tanev and Ballard (if no Garrison).
IMO the Canucks need to get bigger on the back end.
Marchand tried his best to ruin Salo's career. He'll be back wearing Canucks' colours or he'll reitre.
And screw Marchand, I hope he gets dropped on his head next season.
As much as I hated the Marchand hit, I've gotta say, Kesler attempted a similar hit that very year (with a safer outcome) so I don't think we can throw any stones. We're not the good guys either as Canuck fans, so I rather hate it when we try to paint ourselves as saints.

I don't think people would have as much of an issue if it was a guy like Bieksa, or Kesler Marchand hit.
Salo is probably the last player in the league deserving of any sort of cheap shot. The guys been class hos whole career.

It was a cowardly hit. But you have the blinders on.... The game of hockey is won and lost based on hits like that. Claude Lemieux won a Conn Smythe trophy because he played a dirty brand of hockey. But he played within the rules and won a Stanley Cup. If he gets a penalty then so be it. It comes with the territory. I hate Marchand with a passion. But we praise Canadian kids for giving everything they can to win a Cup. Watch the Summit Series and see what our Canadian squad did to win.
Until the rules change, I have no problem with players doing whatever they can to win. Screw etiquette. Etiquette doesn't get you anywhere. You do whatever you can do to win the Cup. Players like Marchand get you there. and that's why I love him and hate him at the same time.
Salo wasn't great at the end of last season - he's clearly not the same player he was a couple of years ago - but he's still a top-6 defenseman on all 30 teams, IMO. Always positionally sound and still very useful on the PP.
$2.5mil or less and it's a good deal, especially in a market where Hal Gill and Shane O'Brien can get $2mil on multi-year deals... and in a universe where Jay Feaster will give $25million and a NMC to Dennis Wideman.
If Salo signs, and the Canucks sign both Schultz and Garrison, he'll get a lot of time in the pressbox. Which is totally fine with me, because he usually steps into the games just fine.
If Sami comes back as a depth defenseman i'll be happy. Probably the most consistent defenseman on our team when healthy and getting scratches now and then just bodes well for him because he's already used to it.
Hoping that the Canucks get Schultz and re-sign Salo, that would have the following players on roster:
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - Tanev
Ballard - Schultz
Alberts - Salo
Unlike last few years, that has extra depth on both the left and right sides, whereas we've always had depth playing off-position previously. If we get Garrison, we trade Ballard for whatever, and that adds a player who can play either side. Not quite as good as the defence with Ehrhoff a few years back, but still very solid.
Smart, crafty player that can still play minutes. We're a better team with him in the line-up. Bring him back for a year, take what you can get from him, then hire him next year. Good guy to have around the team and I'm sure he'll come cheap.
Get real, even Boston fans called that one as an intent to injure.
don't even bother with Kershaw. He hates the Canucks for some reason. He was agreeing with Oilers fans in the Schultz thread that the Oil are on the upswing for moving up 1 spot in the standings, while the Canucks are on the downswing because they didn't make the SCF. Fails at trolling, proved my point for me in that same thread with one of his posts haha
