Matt Irwin Re-signs 1 year

http://www.capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=1648

Cap geek reports that Defenseman Matt Irwin re-signs a 2 way contract with us for 1 year $650k/$105k

Its a minor signing, but its worth noting.

Already noted in the Sharks news thread.

Kitten Mittons should be thrilled!

He took a pay cut. My bet is DW told him "You have the best shot at getting an NHL cup-of-coffee the lower the salary you have" and so he took a near league minimum. Similar to what Mike Moore did. Makes sense to only be one year if that is the case.

If he has a good season and earns an NHL spot, they will renegotiate it next season.

*sigh* I had such high hopes for Moore ... let's hope Irwin doesn't end up the same

My guess is he took near the league minimum because his AHL salary is now maxed out...his qualifying offer could have had a larger NHL salary and a significantly lower AHL one. When you consider he's likely going to spend almost the whole season in Worcester he actually got a raise.

The fastest way to the NHL is to bring a skill set with you that the team that owns you needs...Moore, who probably could be a 6/7 guy on a lot of other NHL teams, doesn't have a skill set that SJ doesn't already have covered.

I don't think he'll get any playing time in the big leagues this season.

Short of being called up because of injuries, I think you're right.
