SJ - PHX "D Squad Swap"

Gets

Keith Yandle
David Rundblad
Brandon Gormley

Gets

Dan Boyle
Marc-Edouard Vlasic
Jason Demers

Sharks get younger, in a pseudo rebuild with great prospects and Phoenix get even more competitive in the short term.

Why would PHX ever do that trade? Don't you think they like having the younger defensemen? PHX was just in the Western Conference Finals because of their defense. Why would they want to shake up their defense?

With the rumored interest in Boyle and Yandle from teams like Pens, I was wondering if the Sharks and the Yotes might arrange a three team trade. Pens or whichever team has interest get Boyle, Sharks get Yandle and the Yotes get picks/prospects from the third team. Sharks get a younger number 1 D for the future, Yotes get several futures allowing OEL to take over, and the whichever third team gets one of the best puckmoving D in the game.

Yandle is not getting trading for prospects and picks. PHX was just in the Western Conference Finals. If they trade Yandle they would most likely want and impact forward in return. They would want a good NHL forward not prospects or picks.

Boyle is too old, Vlassic isn't good enough offensively to make up for what the Coyotes are giving up. Yandle is so key to their offense. If they loose Doan and Whitney, Phx is going to have get much younger too because I can't see them making the playoffs.

That's pretty terrible for Phoenix. And I doubt SJ wants to wait for Gormley and Rundblad to develop.

Whatever comes back from the third team would be up in the air, forwards or whatever, SJ would probably have to add as well. I was just thinking that there have been rumors about Boyle and it makes little sense for SJ with out a replacement to QB the powerplay. Yandle is an amazing player and would take a huge return to pry him out from the Yotes.

Overpayment by Coyotes.

Yandle + Gormley > Boyle + Vlasic due to age etc. Boyle is reaaaaally old. No way PHX trades a young future star in Gormley + Yandle for Boyle as a centerpiece packaged with a great player in Vlasic.

Vlasic > Boyle IMO due to age etc.

Phx does not make this trade since they have no need for a 36 year old or whatever. They're not a top 10 team (especially if Whitney + Doan leaves). Not contending, although they're gonna be a good team.

Rundblad </> Demers ?

San Jose don't do it because Rundblad and Gormley are great prospects but, despite the bad season, the Sharks are still in win-now mode. Vlasic and Demers are NHL-ready now, and we do not have replacements for them.

Might as well retool abit. Yandle will be worth alot for you now and in the future. Not to mention Rundblad + Gormley. Boyle is most likely retiring within 2 seasons. So if you could get Yandle (which you won't) you should go for it. Think longterm as well.

Trades within the division are rare and this trade won't happen.

I will say this much though, if the Coyotes do give up a top elite Dman to San Jose, then either Marleau or Jumbo Joe better be coming the other way.

Neither team does this. There are a lot of posters who are unfamiliar with the Shark's and its D. The Shark's are in win now mode rather than rebuild mode, so NHL players are the focus. Boyle is better than Yandle right now, and Vlasic and Demers are NHL players, whereas Rundblad and Gormley are prospects. Propsects are cheaper than vets, which suits Phoenix's current situation.

Your argument goes out the window with that first sentence. There is no such thing as retool or rebuild when it comes to DW. He's not going to trade three players that matter to his team's championship opportunities for one, no matter how good he is. If it were depth players, sure. However, Vlasic is not depth and Demers, even after a bad year, is more than depth as well considering his age and potential.

I certainly would do this deal without a doubt. However, DW would be pushing to get Yandle by trading scraps instead.
