Avalanche agree to terms on two-year, $5.3m deal with Downie

"The contract will pay Downie $2.55M in first year and $2.75M in second."

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399522

It does not sound like an exorbitant salary was the reason for the trade which may only help the Bolts in a few years.

Yeah but that trade got us Vasilevski! I would've liked to bring Downie back but obviously SFY did not.

Good for both sides. I miss the hell out of him, but since he was dealt I started following that team more closely and found the Avalanche to be one of the most exciting clubs in the NHL. I'd really like to see them make the playoffs next year.

I'm hugely in the minority here (to my knowledge), but bargain Downie contract or not, I think Vasilevski is my favorite asset from that 3-way trade. I liked Downie well enough, but I never really loved him. I like the direction our top-6 is going just fine.

And if you take the Downie part out, Getting Vasilevski for Quincey was highway robbery.

I ended up watching quite a few Avs games on CI last year. Fun team to watch. Landeskog is legit.

Yeah, he quickly became one of my favorite players. Looked like a veteran out there in his rookie season.

Money was never the reason.

I wish Downie well but I wouldn't trade Vasilevski for him.

Yeah, pretty much this. That said, good deal for both him and the Avs.

ya ditto this. I liked Downie, but his trade was a good one for the team. Good luck to him in Colorado.

and is this the only player that we traded before the deadline who has been resigned? ive been thinking about everyone that we traded, and I think this is the only one... just a weird though haha.

I would still trade Vasilevski for Downie. If we sign a forward better than Downie or trade some goalie depth for defensive help maybe I'll feel different, but, until then it all still reeks of...

Downie was awesome but Vasilevski would have been a top-5 pick if teams knew he was coming over, that kid has potential to be one of the best goalies in the world for years to come

Maybe a bit

But the kid does have the talent to be a very good starting goalie in the NHL.

Yzerman was collecting picks for players he was willing to move. Yzerman unfortunately viewed Downie differently than the rest of us and was ok about trading him. He was given the choice to keep Downie, Kyle Quincey, or a 1st round pick, and Yzerman choose the 1st round pick.

Top 5 might be overhyping but if his willingness to come to NA was known before the draft I could have seen Vasilevski as a top 10 pick and possibly going as high as 7th to Minnesota. I definitely wouldn't have minded him at 10.
