Never. Until the Devils are spending at the cap, and have no good players within 365 days of free agency for multiple years in a row, the answer is never. They could be completely secure financially somewhere down the line, but if any of the above happens, it will never end.
Honestly, as a fan of the Devils for 20+ years, whatever mess they are in is a result of the team's poor marketing.
When you have no player pushed merchandise, no 3rd jersey, no cost-effective ticket plans, etc., this is what you end up with at contract time. Just the lack of having additional player merchandise & the 3rd jersey not available for sale is costing them millions a year.
Furthermore, if Marty is looking to make $3M or more a year, he needs his head examined. He should be at $2M & splitting the games in half while training in rotation Kinkaid & Wedgwood for our future.
Its obvious that money and another cup is what he truly wants & doesn't feel this team has the nuts to get it done.

Chere speculated that the Devils' financial situation was preventing them from making an offer to Brodeur.
Chere is just soooo full of it ...
One thing should be noted also - only way to attract money (be it investors or new fans) is by icing an competitive and even exciting team (thus we got Kovy). Who would be willing to unload money for team that just got ... well in short worse in many ways ?
Gotta give money to make money ...
And who exactly is Bill Watters? I still fail to see how the Kings are giving Zach big money now when they wouldn't give Kovy big money two years ago before they had lucrative contracts on their books.
If the Devils are forced to lose Zach and Marty because of finances then I hope JVB loses his shirt completely and is a panhandler in five years.
