for once i agree with almost everthing in a Lawless article, BUT, there is one asterix I would add to this debate. If we build a championship culture over the years and become a perennial playoff team we will become more attractive to SOME UFA's that want to be part of a winner. IF we need them to put us over the top or keep us on top they will probably be more apt to appear.......if we need the top UFA assets to save us or help us reach the playoffs then they will not be interested but that goes for more markets than just Winnipeg.
I still maintain that the WFP has hired a ghost writer for Lawless articles... the ones that are coherent and well thought out - that's the first clue something is off.

Wonder if there will be more Ryan Getzlaf rumors this summer? One year left on his deal before he's a UFA. Still thought the Enstrom+ for Getzlaf proposals had some merit.

Prop: Trade Klingberg to Carolina in exchange for Brody Sutter.

Sign Brett Sutter in FA tomorrow. Promote Lukas Sutter now.

Roll a 4th line of Sutter - Sutter - Sutter. Mayhem ensues.

Profit.

Brody Sutter is a long shot to ever make the NHL.

The only reason he was even drafted was because of his last name and even then, he was taken in the 7th round.

He is gigantic. He will make the NHL as a 4th liner, IMO. Had a great year last year, is also improving his skating.

I wasn't really being serious with the Sutter - Sutter - Sutter suggestion anyway, BTW.

That is why I included this:

In that case he would fit in well on the Jets' 2nd line... and be cheap too.

That would make Beyak's job easier.

All he would have to remember on that shift is "Sutter" and "tight turns."

Colby Armstrong is being bought out by the Leafs. Something we should consider?

What would his role be? 3rd line winger?

We lack the intangibles that come in to play when wanting to join a team capable of winning. Suitable shopping establishments and a team capable of winning would be two examples of this.

Plus, he already salted the ground about 14 months ago... I think he wouldn't get a good reception.

He didn't want to come to Winnipeg in 2010, don't see him coming now.

If anyone is traded from Anaheim's top line, I'm thinking it will be Ryan. Said to be dissatisified with Anaheim management, at least those are the rumours.

If Doan was anyone other than well Doan, he'd be the perfect fit on this team.

A RW with size, skill, speed and physicality - all attributes Chevy likes. Plus before this past year, he seemed like a pretty classy guy and would've fit in with how TN operates. And he could be a good role model for Kane.

Oh well.

If Glass doesn't sign, should/will the Jets go after Konopka?

He would be a good addition to the bottom 6. On this team he might make it in to the top 4-6.

Man Konopka sure would be fun to watch on this team. Guy is absolute money on faceoffs as well.

Oh yes 0.09 ppg is top 4 material
It would just be another 4th line/AHL tweener...
Not that he'd be bad in that role but it's not something we lack of last or this coming season.

Personally I'd like a to target someone who is a legit second liner (RW or C) for a 2-3 year contract, and a legit 3rd liner who has scoring upside (LW or RW)
We can fill the rest with farm
Kane - Little - Wheeler (can switch Kane/Ladd dependent on production)
Ladd - FA - Burmi (Burmi could be C or RW)
FA - Slater - Antro (finally a true 3rd line instead of GST)
Mittens - Cormier - Thorburn (deffensive, high energy minutes, can swap Mittens/FA dependent on who we sign)
13th/depth: Mach

Although if they really want 3 FA's signings, Mittens could become depth forward and you could replace him with Konopka

I was thinking more along the lines that he'd be a prime candidate for the "lets see what he can do with a real opportunity to be something other than a 4th line face-off specialist, part-time knucle dragger/13th forward" approach that Chevy seems to think will miraculously get us a complete bonafide top 6 and get the team to the promised land.

But having Slater and Konopka to throw out for every defensive zone face-off might really do wonders for our goals against.

Just for fun I thought I'd pull some stuff from cap geek:
Top Remaining UFA's in order of PPG (not as nice as PPTOI but I don't have access to behindthenet at work and I'm far to lazy to number crunch myself right now)

Player - Pos - Age - PPG
WHITNEYRAY – L – 40 – 0.94
PARISEZACH – L – 27 – 0.84
PARENTEAPA – R – 29 – 0.84
SELANETEEMU - R - 41 - 0.80
JOKINENOLI – C – 33 – 0.74
JAGRJAROMIR – R – 40 – 0.74
SEMINALEXANDER – R – 28 – 0.74
DOANSHANE – R – 35 – 0.63
HUDLERJIRI – L – 28 – 0.62
SULLIVANSTEVE – L – 37 – 0.61
WELLWOODKYLE – C/R – 29 – 0.57
SAMUELSSONM – R – 35 – 0.57
SMYTHRYAN – L – 36 – 0.56
SYKORAPETR – R – 35 – 0.54
KOSTITSYNANDREI – R – 27 – 0.50

It starts to nose dive quickly into the Stapletons and Totoos... Realistically looking at need, I would like to re-sign Wellwood or grab one of Jokinen, Samuelson, Sykora, Kostitsyn.... I think they are the only ones in the FA that can legitamately fill in our sole top6 spot (with considering the other 5 being Kane, Little, Wheeler, Ladd, and Burmi).

Adding another name to the bargain basement wish list, Dylan Reese.
http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stati...34+45+46+63+67

Hes young (27) he shoots right and while SSS applies he put up pretty decent numbers on a terrible Islanders D-core. In 28 games he was even on a -52 Islanders team.
So thats now MAG, Muller, and Reese.

Pretty sure the team will take a step back this year, don't think management is content with almost making it (see Calgary). Should see some promotions from STJ.

Doan would be fine here. He said he wouldn't want to be away from his family that long or take them out of Phoenix. Nothing bad about Winnipeg, just some bad rumours and reporting
