I know if won't happen, but I think it's about time to start chucking offer sheets out--not at Weber, that's been debated to no end, but at the host of other young, high-end blue-liners:

Three names stand out in particular:
- Johnson (COL)
- Kulikov (FLA)
- Carlson (WAS)

Colorado has money to burn, so that's a reach.

Washington has about $20 million in cap space--with three major free agents (Semin, Green, and Carlson). They also only have 9 forwards under contract. If they overpay for Semin and Green, things could get a little tricky, but this is also a stretch, since they are a cap team.

Which brings me to Florida. They have a ton of cap space, but no one really knows where their budget is. They have a number of key contributors RFA or UFA--including Versteeg, Garrison, Kulikov, and others.

Would they match an OS with an annual value of $4-4.5? It is a bit of an overpayment now, but Kulikov looks like a stud, well worth the 1st / 3rd compensation.

It is probably only feasible if they resign Garrison--which, I admit, is unlikely. Still, pretending for a minute that they do--say, at a discount of $5 AAV--Florida would have something like $21 million tied up in their six roster defensemen (assuming they bring back Ellerby).

Campbell (7.1) - Garrison (5.0)
Jovanovski (4.1) - Gudbranson (3.1--ELC)
Weaver (1.1) - Ellerby (900k)

If we assuem they are a cap-floor team ($54 million), it starts to get a little tight.

Is this completely absurd?

Leafs bought out Colby Armstrong.

He was due $3 million this year. Maybe he'd take a nice, low-hit deal to play 3rd / 4th line here?

...why not?

He'll get his money from the Leafs. If he's willing to accept, say, $900k, I think he's a better option for the fourth line than Harry Z or Ben Holmstrom.

I wouldn't mind Armstrong. He's always been a pain in the ass to play against.

Bartulis being put on unconditional waivers

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Oskars Bartulis (PHI) and Eric Boulton (NJD) as well as Armstrong (TOR) on unconditional ($125) waivers for buyout purposes.

Bartulis being bought out. Guess mini benefit is a slightly lower number vs the summer cap.

Laughton? Why? He's a few years away, and they keep his rights for two years.

... and if signed and sent back to juniors, the contract will slide and don't count towards the 50 contract limit.

Didnt know if he was going to be invited to camp with a shot to make the team.

He might be, but I doubt they would clear a contract now for that purpose.

One of Couturier or Schenn already figures to center the 3rd line, with Talbot on the 4th. I can't see how Laughton pushes for a spot this year.

It seems more likely that the deal is either about making a bit more room under the summer cap, or clearing a contract for UFAs--perhaps both.

Not sure why Flyers would buy-out a 1-yr, $600k Phantoms player unless they are trying to open roster spots.

Makes a good point, unless they feel bad for Bartulis and want to give him a chance elsewhere.

Was he really that bad in the AHL this year that he couldn't get a shot with the team, or was he hurt?

Actually, on second thought, would he have had to pass through waivers last year?

Well he wasn't bad but he wasn't that good either. I guess they thought that the younger guys (Gus, MAB, Manning) have better chances. Those three would carry the minutes down there while Bart was getting scratched a few games here and there and struggled mightily at times.

I think its a good choice. Free's up a contract space, which we know the Flyers love to sign players. I can't see Laughton making the team and really hope he stays down there for atleast a year. He really turned it on the 2nd half of the season, and a full season of that will really help him.

Agreed. Laviolette would always have to play Armstrong - Talbot against the Penguins just for that extra little annoyance.

So how much does Bartulis count against the summer cap now? 100K? Nothing?

Armstrong is too damaged to bother with.

100k this year and next year for a total of 200k, unless I'm missing something.

Cap hit is 1/3rd of salary for him.
