That doesn't fit ours either, he's not a finisher

Well he had 61 points on a very average Flames team last season. But, most importantly , he had 223 shots last season which would put him up with Weber and Hornqvist as our only real prolific shooters.

Jokinen is still settling for average, still not elite in my eyes

That may be true, but he's the best option available at C. Unless we want to trade for one.

OK, here's what I'm doing if I'm Poile and wanting to be super aggressive without draining our prospect pool. Go hard after Parise tomorrow. Get him signed. Re-up Suter since Suter now knows that the team is wanting to drop cash and be competitive with the big boys. Re-up Weber as well as a message has been sent. Here's where it gets fun. As much as I think Wilson has potential, use him and either Ellis or Blum plus a number 1 pick and another piece if necessary, maybe Halischuk and get Ryan. Use Ryan at center between Parise and Erat. Now we have a top line. We haven't demolished the farm. Still have a very young team. Still have good pieces in the system. Ryan is on an affordable deal for the next 3 years. If Suter, Weber and Parise all sign here, you know it's long term deals so our core is here at least 3 years and the main core at least 7-8 years. That's being aggressive, calculating and smart all at the same time.

People will say we can't afford those guys and I beg to differ. We have the cap space to do it. Who else would it make sense to spend the money on? You also load the contracts differently so some guys make a ton some years while others are making a little less so your cap hit and what is actually paid in salary are similar, much like Poile did with Erat and Legwand.

Here is some interesting news:

@JoshYohe_Trib: The Tennesseean recently reported that Nashville is interested in Martin. I can confirm that Nashville isn't on Martin's no-trade list.

For Radulov's right and some.

Malkin, Radulov good friends.

Paul Martin played well (top 4 D-man) in the Devils system which was not known for talent. The Devils system is similar to the Trotz system. Logic would suggest that it could work for us.

you may be right. you may be wrong. we can get a much better hockey player at his price and salary. don't make moves just to get to the floor

because we were 2 million below the cap floor until we did

edit: Eklund says we are looking at both Mason and Ellis as potential backups, and Clemmensen

(would love for my Mason jersey to be useful again)

it was... those were our two late in the game UFA signings... most people don't remember because we were under imminent threat of being sold and moved when they were signed

yeah those were truly bad times. may find ourselves in similar predicaments with no suter.. minus possibly being moved.

I'd rather have Martin than JBo, to be honest. Not that I love Martin, I just really really dislike JBo.

I wouldn't mind that. It wouldn't be my first choice by any means, but I could live with that if it came down to it. He's another mobile minute-cruncher, not unlike Suter or Bouwmeester.

Meh...Martin did really well in a defensive first system before. I wouldn't mind picking him up if it's cheap.

Martin is an overpaid 2nd pairing Dman. JBo is an overpaid 1st pairing defenseman.

Martin will be cheaper in both $ and assets of course, but I'd rather have JBo, assuming it costs us no more than Blum+mid pick.

If Suter leaves, I'd love JBo. If we dont get him, let's get Martin. If Suter leaves and Weber is traded because he won't re-sign, hell, trade for both of them.

I agree, it would be awesome to be the team that breaks the Bouwmeester playoff curse.

agreed. Bouwmeester's contract seems hefty, but we're in an age where Doughty makes 7, Campbell makes 7.2, and Suter is likely going to be making 8 or 9. For a legit number 2 d-man, 6.6 isn't that bad. He's considerably better in all aspects than Martin.

I would prefer Bouwmeester or, if we go FA route, Carle, before we take on Martin--who is also the oldest of the bunch at 31.

thats overpriced for this year but the way prices are going up that will be fair value going forward.

guess poile and Trotz liked what they saw.

these moves should tell everyone that we are in "win now" mode.... that we for once are not going to go into the season hoping that three or four rookies will all step up and fill slots...
