No huge surprise here. He adds an element to the blueline that the habs dont have enough of in the first place.

Hilarious considering Eller is younger and was far more valuable last year.

I say this as an Emelin fan, but it is hilarious to hear Eller dismissed because 16 goals and being the second best penalty killing forward on the team at 22 yet Emelin, who has proven nothing except that he hits hard is a key player.

Really happy he sgned and he is not going to the KHL. He is our grittiest defenceman along with Georges. Good job Bergevin once again. Cant wait so see Bergevin in action tomorrow...

Moens value came out so quickly, strange this one is taking longer.

I don't disagree but Emelin brings a new dimension to the team. One which we've been lacking for a LONG time.

... God I hated Jacques Martin.

I agree that Alexi Emelin brings something different to the table. It is why i would keep him ahead of guys like Diaz or Weber.

Will he be RFA or UFA at the end of the contract?

Markov, Gorges, Subban, Emelin, Diaz, Weber, Kaberle.

We definitely could use a stay-at-home D man to complete that group. Figure out what we are doing with Kaberle, Weber and/or Diaz.

I am thrilled Emelin is staying, I love his hits. I also think he is a decent to good defender, skates well and has offensive upside. I think big hitters like Emelin can bring far more fear to the opposition than show fights.

But Emelin had some very rough games too, and while he needed time to adapt and it's understandable, I just think its ridiculous to claim Emelin has shown more than Eller.

I wonder how his english is coming along. Hopefully he is putting a decent effort into learning. Lack of communication between the team / coaches had to be a bit of a pain in the *** last year.

Although I expected more, Emelin was plenty good. I look forward to his progress, especially since Markov will be there to guide him right from the beginning of training camp.

Could use some crease clearers that keep the opposition honest in front of price. Perhaps a Bryan Allen type. Of course, it going to be a tough sell to lure any d-man here with the logjam that is present. We have depth in quantity to some extent but our D core as a whole is not well rounded.

Eller is already a solid player and I see a fair bit of room to grow.

Agreed, Allen would be a great addition

Subban - Georges
Markov - Emelin
Allen - Kaberle
Diaz

In today's NHL puck movers are more in need than "crease cleaners". That being said we could really use a veteran shutdown guy like LA has with Mitchell...Salvador Allen or somebody similar.

You need both... not necessarily one more than the other. Trouble is that some of defensemen last year couldn't do either of those things.

As a whole, this group can move the puck. I dont see that area of the game as a particular weakness of the squad, but I see a much larger room for improvement in the defensive zone, particularly around the crease.
