If you look at the last 5-6 cup winners, except for Boston, most of the others had more skill than big bruisers back there. I think if you add a good sized veteran and Emelin progresses as anticipated this would take care of the need for size and physicality back there. Adding a more buising bottom 6 also helps, indirectly. Easier for the d-men to be mean in front of the net if they know they have back up.

My favourite part about Emelin is that he's actually a pretty skilled d-man across the board. He's not just a big hitting idiot who treats the puck like a hot potato.

Really excited about this news. 2 million a year is a great deal for both sides. Wonder where he'll slot in and who with next year. Lots of options

May be old news but Emelin's deal with MTL is $2M per year for two yrs.

4 mil over 2 years. Good deal if you consider he could play top 4 wirth some progression.

This is a little higher than I expected but Moen took a discount for sure.

It sounds like a bit more than some expected, but don't forget that he isn't a 22-23 year old on his second contract plus he had the KHL option out there. I still think he can easily outproduce that contract.

Moen would have got quite a bit more if he went to UFA.

2 Milli for Emelin isn't that bad. I figured he was gunna get 1.5.

Emelin made a lot more money in the KHL and he also played 18min a night for Russia in the IIHF championships en route to a Gold medal. He's a stud.

I think Moen could have definitely gotten 2 mil/year as a UFA, 4-5 teams were said to be very interested. He is a high end bottom 6 guy.

Weird thing to say considering we just signed Moen to a deal below what he could have easily gotten on the open market.

And $2m for Emelin is really nothing. I'd pay $2m for a guy like him any day.

I dunno what the hell people are talking about.

The guy absolutely killed everything in site, and only struggled towards the end because of a shoulder injury.

Once he gets used to the NHL on a nightly basis watch out.

Now who does he play with next year?

Markov? Subban? Gorges? Diaz? Kaberle?

I think he was going to get 1.5-1.7, then the cap went up.

Moen could have probably made close to $2.25-2.5 a year as a UFA. Teams covet players like him with Cup experience.

This is a fair deal. I would say he is currently worth that much, but has the ability to progress and become worth more.

You're not going to get guys that hit and block shots like him for that low of a price very often.

In all honesty with the cap increasing 3 wouldn't have been out of the realm of possibility for Moen.

Moen at $1.85M and now Emelin at $2M? Very, very pleased.

People have to stop looking at him as a rookie, he's 26. He's been around the block in Russia & International Play & now the NHL.

Were lucky to have him at 2/per. Could easily get much more back in the KHL!

Why?

He was a rookie last year just the same as Adam Larsson was. Was he not?

People don't call him a rookie in the sense he's got 5-7 potential years of getting better ahead...but there's a pretty big learning curve to becoming a d-man, especially for a guy who came from a league with different rink dimensions.

Also, you look at a guy out of the CHL born and raised in North America and playing as a rookie and compare it to a guy coming ot of the KHL born and raised in Russia and their ages are completely irrelevant. It's a totally different game over here.

Also has to deal with culture clash and all that stuff.

By any standards, he had a very impressive rookie season and was RFA. 2 mil is not a crazy salary for a guy who is not only coming off his rookie NHL season, but also off his rookie contract.
