If Carle wants a deal that's something like 6 years @ $5.5mil I'm fine with him leaving. Gives us more room for extensions to our young guys and can put more pressure on Meszaros, Schenn and Gustafsson to step up.
I think Kimmo would settle for less if he re-signed. He's one of the few guys who would take a little less because winning outweighs money at that point.
He said that the other day. Elliotte Friedman actually said a few weeks ago that he felt Carle wanted to move west, closer to home. Clearly didn't want him back bad enough, the Flyers don't let people they want to keep leave.
Hopefully the replacement doesn't cost much. Garrison might be out of reach, might be one of Kuba or Roszival, I think.

They're not that weak. Timonen, Coburn, Meszaros, Grossmann and L.Schenn are all good players, probably all top 4 defensmen, it's just playing well as a unit that isn't so good. Perhaps not enought variation (bar Kimmo) amongst them but then there isn't really a fix for that on the UFA market anyway. Trade probably is the only way to improve it but it's not as if that's the worse D ever. Just doesn't suit out system so much, not enough guys good at the transition game.

Mez was horrible last year and Schenn we will have to see on because he was getting trash talked a lot by Maple Leaf fans last season (granted I only watched the Maple Leaf games against the Flyers last season). But with Carle they are still not top rated. I'd rather go with what we have, which we all know is not top notch, but then go after someone at the trade deadline or next off season. Or, heaven forbid, actually develop one of our own. Keeping Carle will make our defense better but not good enough to really be considered Cup worthy. I'd rather save the money to use for someone who hopefully can make the defense Cup worthy.

Considering the contracts that it seems the big names (and some average names) may be getting, that could be a blessing in disguise. The Flyers have a huge amount of cap space tied up in an average defense. We will be needing cap flexibility for our forwards soon; one less insane contract would help.

If the Ducks get him, it would make any Ryan deal that much more difficult since they might not want a d going back - or easier if they need cap space and are okay getting quantity.

Kimmo wasn't being overplayed last year, until all the injuries hit.
He was behind Carle and Coburn (and Pronger) and comparable to Meszaros.
Carle shouldn't have been playing 25 minutes while anchoring a pairing in the first place. He was in over his head, but there was no other option. I think it'll be fine.
with one of Grossmann or (preferably) Meszaros traded for as good a return as possible.
Part of it will depend on if we can package deal Mez away if we sign Suter. Otherwise we can't really afford to move any D because I do not like the idea of Lilja/Manning/MAB/Gus pairing out the bottom D.
