Woo, then Garrison can regress to his career norms and Mueller will struggle with concussion issues, leaving us with Chimera in our top six and another overpaid mediocre LD!
He's only had two full seasons, and he's been solid defensively in both. I've got no illusions that he'll continue his offensive production from this year, but his career norms suggest he's very capable defensively. Yeah, it's an overpayment, but I don't see anyone comparable who can be had for much less. Do you have any suggestions?
How many signings for the big club are people thinking? Two? Three? One? Seems a consensus that the Caps need a top 6 winger - what else?
Ideally they could use a 2LD to push Hamrlik down to the 3rd pairing
And a depth (4th line) winger.
But year, top 6 W is what they need... and probably won't get, unless they're going for Penner IMO... (Parise would be great fit, but I think he's ending up in Minnesota). I think anyone expecting the team to make a splash is going to be disappointed.
I'm hoping for a legit Top 6 W and a Top 4 LD. A shutdown 3C (which would allow Laich to play on the wing in the top six, where he's more effective) would also be nice, but not likely.

Obviously things can change quick, but it appears Brodeur, Parise, Hedberg, Ponikarovsky, Salvador and Sykora will all test free agency.
“@SWhyno: Will #Caps be quiet in free agency? McPhee: "If we don't do anything, I wouldn't be disappointed" http://t.co/ziLwqFnY”
He wouldn't be disappointed with this lineup?
Marcus Johansson ($0.900m) / Nicklas Backstrom ($6.700m) / Alex Ovechkin ($9.538m)
Brooks Laich ($4.500m) / Mike Ribeiro ($5.000m) / Troy Brouwer ($2.350m)
Jason Chimera ($1.750m) / Jay Beagle ($0.825m) / Joel Ward ($3.000m)
Matt Hendricks ($0.825m) / Mattias Sjogren ($0.900m) / Mathieu Perreault ($0.825m)
Karl Alzner ($1.285m) / John Carlson ($2.000m)
Roman Hamrlik ($3.500m) / Mike Green ($5.000m)
Jeff Schultz ($2.750m) / Dmitry Orlov ($0.900m)
John Erskine ($1.500m) /
Braden Holtby ($0.638m)
Michal Neuvirth ($1.150m)
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $14,130,428
That looks like a recipe for mediocrity if I've ever seen one. God I hope he was just ************ there.
I think that they've just got too much cap space to not spend though... Probably around 16 Million (Poti on LTIR), after re-signing Green (~5 Million), Carlson (~2.5), Beagle (~825,000), & Perreault (~825,000).

He was confident with that team at the trade deadline last year. So why not now with a new coach that wants to push the envelope more? I agree with you but your are talking about a guy who hates free agency and even more so after being burned by Hamrlik and Ward contracts.
