The Whitney deal isn't nearly as bad as some of you are making it out to be.

If Parise is asking for 24 mill in two days....... That's Crazy. No wonder teams didn't even bother showing up.

But it isn't good.
2-years 4.5 a season and a NMC for a 40-year old. If it isn't a bad deal to you...it isn't a good one either.

Yes. Yes it is. I wouldn't give him that amount of money for 5 years - let alone 2.

For a team needing to reach the floor that's fine. For the Kings ? that's an awful deal.

You guys do realize that paying up front means paying less in the future right?

I think teams arn't showing-up because of the Richards fiasco last year

Not if Parise and his agent are asking for an annual Salary in the 8mill range. Zach may want 100mill, Kovi got that.... Why not ask for it.

It's 1 year because it is Boyes. The guy goes from like 40 goal scorer to practically a fringe fourth liner in a couple of years. Cheechoo 2.0

Signing bonuses count towards cap hit. So his actual annual salary would be a lot lower every year by paying him a lot of money up front.

The signing bonus guarantees he gets paid if there's a lockout.
Brad Richards got the same money last year and LA offered that.
Also no teams are showing up because 20 teams are interested in him so there's going to be no face-to-face meetings.

If he asks for a 100mill over 10 years..... You still have to pay him a lot over 10 years.

Parise is represented by Newport. Their initial demands are always a joke.
Good for Detroit for not even sending their representatives to the Newport offices.

I don't see why everyone is scared of what the signing bonuses are for Parise. His salary would be very low(think 2 million this season), and it's not the first year a major UFA has wanted that type of deal.

Again NO ONE is going to Newport because more than 20 teams are interested and there's no way they can have them all show up for face-to-face meetings. All offers will be over phone.

No, that's not what's being asked for.
With the cap maximum being 70.2 million the maximum salary for a single year is 20% of that number so roughly 14 million. Of that 14 million in salary 12 million of it is being asked for as a bonus with only 2 million in base salary for year 1 and 2.
That gives the player a massive upfront payday in year 1 and a guaranteed 12 million in year 2 even if there's a lockout since the bonus isn't impacted by if there's a season or not.

On the contrary, Meehan told everybody not to come. More than 20 teams tried to set up appointments.

Currently, I'd say he stays in Chicoutimi one more year. If Bernier gets traded then maybe he ends up in Ontario. But right now he probably stays, still way too raw and he'll need all the development time he can get.

It's dangerous to commit $4.5 million/year to a player who WILL be a cap hit even if he retires...
I like Whitney as a player, but at what level do you expect him to compete for the next two years given that he's 40 years old?
