That's what they all say. Every summer. Bryzgalov for Smith was supposed to get us a top five pick.

good for ray, but a lot of $ to give up
It is but it's only for 2 years and I can bet this is his last contract (unless he signs a 1day for retirement). Same contract on something like 5+ years would be a much bigger issue.

Sad for Phoenix.

LOL at TSN talking about how hard it was for New Jersey players with the franchise financial struggles and how devastating that they can lose Brodeur and Parise.

Phoenix has been a lame duck franchise for 3 years and STILL dont know where the team will play in the future

Both Whitney and Doan said they will sign in Phoenix if the ownership issue is settled. Today's signing is indicative that it is still unsettled.

In the spirit of Euro 2012, maybe the Coyotes can play a 4 - 1? All their talent and depth is at defense.

9 Million for a guy who vanished in the playoffs when his team needed him? Overpayment much?

A little pricy, but a damn good player. Thought that he maybe would sign with a team that has a better chance at winning the cup though.

You guys are freakin crazy.

4.5 is too much?
the guy was 13th!!!! in league scoring..i dont care if he's 40...he put up 77 points and he played all 82 games.
The guys an absolute STEAL at 4.5.

Even if he drops down to 50 points over the next two years..its still a 'fair' deal considering how the caps going up and what players are signing for.

Excellent deal for Dallas. If you dont think so, you need to give your head a shake...

Whitney had won a cup with Carolina so to him winning the cup isn't imporant but could win one with Dallas if the team makes it to the final.

Pretty much. Some people are just mad that he had more points at 40yo than any of their players and on a defensively minded team.

He put up 77 points on a contract year and was reaching for his 1000th NHL point. He was good in the 1st round and 1st half of the 2nd round but disappered after that. At best, the Stars are taking a gamble on a player who is going to be in a different system than what Tippett has in Phoenix.

Would have loved him on the Canucks to fill our gaping hole at 2RW. Hopefully we can snag Parenteau or Doan. Good for Dallas.

Lol'ing at people saying it's an overpayment. 4.5M for a guy who scored 77 points last year?

And we've got so much cap space it ridiculous. We'd be fine giving him 6M a year (glad we didn't, though).

I am not "they." I am me. Engage with what I say. The Coyotes have lost their leading scorer, and in all likelihood are about to lose the face of the team and third leading scorer. I can't recall them losing this much, at least not in recent history. They now have exactly one or two (depending on whether you count Antoine Vermette, and assuming Doan leaves) top-six forwards on their roster. If they don't replace the lost scoring, they will not make the playoffs. There are good teams (i.e. Dallas) that will overtake them.

At this point, they're basically the Minnesota Wild.

We'll be EXTREMELY lucky to even make the playoffs the next couple of years, much less contend for a cup. He wanted the 2nd year, he's said that himself.

I would have thought he wanted to win a cup but I guess getting two more years of the most money he could get was more important. I'm sure his kids will be happy.

I give you credit for saying that seeing how so many now think the Stars are a lock for the playoffs on a player that put up great numbers last season but chances are he won't do the same in the future.

How much capspace do you guys have ? Maybe Stars are aiming to Doan there as well.

I really thought he'd stay with the Yotes. Huge blow for them.

Anyone who thinks this is not an overpayment and that he'll get 70+ pts is fooling themselves. One only needs to look at How much Teemu's production dropped in one year; from 1.1ppg to 0.8ppg. I'd expect Jagr like numbers from Ray this year.

Having said that, its not a terrible signing and Dallas needs to spend up to hit the cap anyways and they're not going to land a bigger fish than this.

This is certainly about the money and 2 years. It can't be about winning the cup, stars aren't close for sure. He signed quickly, so he must know this is at the high end of what he could get on the market. At 40, after a good year in the right system, and an option year, no where to go but down from here. GMDM would not match this even if Ray was willing to stay.

Gotta figure Brodeur's agent likes this signing.
