So what does Columbus' top 6 look like?

If anyone wants a good appreciation of Foligno, you should watch last year's NYR series.

For one, he's not skilled enough for a top-6 role, in fact, when he tries to be creative he often loses the puck which leads to odd man rushes. Foligno can take a lot of dumb penalties (see:goaltender interference), but he can also draw penalties when people rage on him.

He can take care of himself in a fight, he hits a lot, and he can play both LW and C. He puts up decent points, but isn't as defensible responsible as you would imagine a bottom-6 guy to be. He does however drive to the net with wanton abandon.

He's a pretty unique player, and I wouldn't want the Sens to trade him, but he's not a "power forward".

He's more like a skilled agitator who hits. If he were able to improve further, I can definitely see him carving out a top-6 niche on the right team, but he does have limitations.

Ottawa lost a lot of grit today - konopka, foligno, carkner

Yeah, I think Murray could've gotten more for Foligno. Not a good idea to replace him with an injury prone equivalent either

The thing I don't understand about this trade was that Foligno was starting to come into his own. 47 points last year. 4 points in 7 playoff games which was tied for 2nd on the team. I still think he had room to grow too. I'm surprised they chose Latendresse over him.

I can't believe Phoenix couldn't offer more for Foligno. We need a player like him so bad with Doans future uncertain.

Methot is, of course, extremely underrated on HFBoards. No glitz means he can't be good, right? He's a solid stay-at-home defenseman. Good age too. Price seems about right. This is a pure hockey trade that makes sense for both teams.

Wondering if Foligno's actual replacement is Silfverberg/Zibanejafd, and this is a clearing-out-the-logjam move. Foligno did take a lot of dumb goalie interference penalties.

You're trading a Foligno, a young hardworking physical top 6er for a player that has major injury and past work ethic issues? Wow.

Ottawa has tons of forwards coming up, tons to fill the bottom 6.
Ottawa's needs were on defence and this helps

I'm going to assume both those players would need time on the bottom 6. Even so, Foligno would be fitting in a checking role anyway. No need to clear Foligno out.

Gotta say I didn't see this coming. I guess this squashes the Nash to Ott stuff as Nick was considered a main part of that.

Seems decent for both teams. Sens get a big, fairly effective d-man and the Jackets get a solid forward.

Pretty fair deal. I like it a lot for Columbus, but think Ottawa got a good player too. No winner, just a solid hockey trade.

Nick Foligno is not a top 6 forward right now. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply looking at his point totals.

I dont think that this is a horrible deal for Ottawa by any means. Its a fair hockey deal.

Foligno hasnt impressed me offensively. I feel like he is great 3rd line winger but not someone who you can trust to score 50 pts on the 2nd line every year.

Methot is underrated and exactly what the Sens need. Now that they signed Latendresse who is a real top 6 guy if he can stay healthy that makes up for losing Foligno. He aint that big of a loss for Ottawa IMO.
