this is one of the best signings the habs have made in years. how long has it been since we had a big gritty forward that would drop the gloves with anyone while also be able to hold his own as a player?
Overpaid by 500 K. Would have dropped out of the bidding at over 2 M per. I am glad we have him and I like this much tougher and grittier direction though. Also glad we are stocking up on depth so we can avoid the ''defenceman playing forward'' and ''skilled forward playing 4th line role'' garbage we witnessed far too much in the Gainey-Gauthier era.
The good thing is we should have a few kids making the team on cheap ELC's come October 2013 to help alleviate some of the cap pain of a deal like this.
Also seems to be clear Galchenyuk is Sarnia bound for another year, which will mean he will first become a RFA in 2016 when Plekanec/Bourque/Moen/Prust will have expired. Obviously that is a long ways away, but it had to be considered when they made the Moen and Prust 4 years offers.
Our bottom 6 is going to finally look like one though and that is good.
That's a lot of money for Prust and I wouldn't have gone over 1.5 for him. But you guys will love him. Great locker room guy, good on the PK and a total warrior. Tough as nails. Best of luck to Prust
He is also completely unafraid of fighting someone twice his size.
He loses fights pretty often, but he will fight anyone if he has to.
Habs last year until Stabuitz showed up with 20 games to go , had no one that could even protect themselves, beside Moen .
Prust win or lose ,it's the standing up part Habs lacked. Tom Kostoplus was one of the most respected by Montreal fans while a Hab,he might have won 1 fight out of every 20 ....but no fear.
I still expect Habs to bring in a Heavyweight , that's what the coach said .
Is it wrong that I like getting Jagr for the wrong reasons?
I mean, short term deal and a great talent but...if we suck next year...Noke, Boullion, Armstrong, Jagr on 1 year deals and kaberle, Markov, gionta etc... on 2 year deals. The potential for returns is high if we're looking towards the future. Not that I wish it, I just appreciate the back up scenario.
Maybe slightly. But he's a great defensive player, great on the PK and tough as nails. His cap hit represents 3.5% of our cap this year, in 2 years it'll be even less.

Hah, I want Jagr too for the wrong reasons. But he would sure look fine playing next to Pleks. Problem is that we have Gionta and Cole as RWs, and it's unreasonable to move one of those guys off the top 6.
Laraque was an overpayment. Not Prust. At least the guy can skate, play well defensively, score some odd goals, and fight.
Guys like Prust make guys like Moen a lot better. Team toughness and all that. The total overpayment to Prust is about one year's overpayment to Kaberle.
To me, it's clear there's more money out there than talent to spend it on. Overpaying a UFA is a luxury rich teams can afford, because they really should have room under a 70 mil. cap. Prust is exactly the kind of player this team needed. Look at the difference Staubitz made, who isn't half as useful a hockey player.
Not going crazy. Prust is mid-size, tough as nails 4th liner who excels on the PK and can play some 3rd line minutes. In that role, he's one of the best in the league. I think fans in Montreal will appreciate what he brings, and won't obsess over his salary or his stats.
Wild overpayment, tho. I really can't pretend otherwise. Just glad we spent the money on something we really, really needed.

And ignore one of our biggest needs for this team for a tiny bit of money, $500,000 (which comes out to $6,100 a game.....petty cash)?
Pierre Gauthier would have done the same as you suggest. Thank God you and Pierre arent the GM.
As someone posted earlier, Montreal has been lacking a player of Prust's caliber. He is very useful and plays a role like Clarkson for the Devils.
Prust is worth every penny for this "team". Now if we were loaded with tough players like the Bruins, yes, we could complain about this being an overpayment.
