Yeah, July 4th, 2003. I was speechless to see Teemu & Paul going to the Avs.

Injuries. So much hype and expectations. I still pretend that season never happened . It only went down hill from there. 03-04 marked the end of the mighty Avalanche. 95-04 was the best time to watch the Avalanche play hockey. Every game was so exciting.

Sure, there were the cups. But the pinnacle, the singular defining moment, will always be...

Admit it.

Ooof... that really was a lousy day for you guys in retrospect. I was not happy about losing Spacek. Our PP has not been the same since.

Straka - Gomez - Jagr
Shannahan - Drury - Prucha

Our collective hearts were ripped out that day. Both of our captains were on other teams by 5:00 pm.

Terrible day.

I was in the hospital for a medical study last July 1st and the only signing I had heard about while hospitalized was Jagr to Philly. Then I heard about Florida and thinking this:
and how despite the need to be above the cap floor would not be enough for the playoffs.

Hossa signing with the Wings. I knew it was a one year thing, and it almost worked out. To this day I respect the poop out of Hossa for doing what he felt necessary to win a Cup, risking injury and tens of millions in future earnings.

Back in the late 90's and early 00's the Leafs made some key additions. Cujo with Roberts and Corson really gave us that bay street bully mentality. Then nabbing Mogilny not long after gave Sundin a winger. Then came the year where Cujo couldn't come to terms with us, and left for Detroit while we replaced him with Belfour.

Cant say ive really ever had a good Sabres July 1

I remember Hasek getting traded and me being pissed off to no end and basically ruining my camping trip

then of course there is 7/1/07, the day which will live in infamy

I was at my ex girlfriends house while me and her cousin were glued to the computer. When word broke that briere signed in Philly, we were all pretty bummed out but figured they had decided to keep Drury as most expected it would be one or the other. Then Drury went to NYR and it just killed the mood of the house, and me, for weeks

Since I've been watching free agency (really didn't get into it in 2007):

July 1, 2008:
-Blue Jackets previously trade Colorado's 1st (acquired for Adam Foote) and a 3rd to Philadelphia for RJ Umberger and a 4th.
--Liked it. Still do.
-Blue Jackets trade Gilbert Brule to Edmonton for Raffi Torres
--Torres contributed and, especially in 2009-10, became a heart-and-soul guy you'd want around your locker room. Now they're teammates in Phoenix.
-Blue Jackets sign Mike Commodore
--There was a guy that wanted to be in COLUMBUS? And he seemed to be a solid defenseman? Sign me up! (It lasted only a couple years, but it was better than what we'd seen in a while.)
-Blue Jackets trade Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche to NYR for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman.
--Was slightly disappointed to see Z go, as he'd had a good season. Kind of puzzling at the time until the below move took place. Fritsche was a spare part. Tyutin's still on the team, is the only piece still on the team he was traded to, and has been solid. Backman was bad.
-Blue Jackets sign Kristian Huselius.
--Holy Crap. Got some fire power now! (Been hurt the last couple years, but put up decent numbers when he was healthy.)

July 1, 2009:
-Blue Jackets sign Mathieu Garon.
--Needed a new backup, let's see what he can do behind Calder Winner Steve Mason.
-Blue Jackets sign Samuel Pahlsson.
--Ok...Manny was asking for too much money, but hey, Sammy's getting paid a little more than that and is a former Selke finalist. So let's see how this goes. (Badly.)

...are we not going to fill any other holes, Scott? I mean we lost a few "leaders in the room" coming off the playoff year...OK...I guess we're not.

July 1, 2010:
-Blue Jackets claim Ethan Moreau off waivers from Edmonton.

(crickets)

So...really bad year after a playoff year and you're just gonna stay the course, eh, Howson...?

July 1, 2011:
-James Wisniewski previously signed.
-Jeff Carter previously acquired from Philadelphia for Jakub Voracek, a 1st, and a 3rd.
--At first I'm like , but now I'm like

Do we need to patch up the defense? You know, maybe give Scott Hannan's agent a jingle? NO! Let's just sign a bunch of pieces for the AHL and Rick Nash's BFF Aaron Johnson! Oh, and let's flat out tell Johan Hedberg and Tomas Vokoun's agents "No!" and sign Mark Dekanich...

I remember 2006, right around dinner time, seeing all at once that the Wild had signed Kim Johnsson, Keith Carney and Mark Parrish...that was pretty cool.

2009, Havlat signing right before midnight (on the 2nd of course) if I remember correctly; I remember seeing it on my phone. I remember the Wild trading for Marek Zidlicky and bringing back Andrew Brunette too...I thought those moves were awesome at the time!

Other random memories: the ridiculous Marian Hossa contract with the Hawks, Jeff Finger, Joni Pitkanen getting traded twice. Say, didn't the Dany Heatley saga end on July 1st because that was when he got his big cash bonus? That was priceless.

Other than the false Chara report, the Kovalchuk saga is really the only one that stands out. I recall being extremely pissed off when he chose NJ. In hindsight, it was the best thing that could've happened to us.
