Knew it. Like that it's one year.

We needed to make this move, but I thought we might get someone on a more flexible contract to give Smith a chance to compete for the backup gig. This will do just fine, though.

Maybe he'll provide us with the goal scoring boost we always seem to be in need of.

He's come full circle. He was the starter in 2007, then Ellis took over and wouldn't sign in 2008 until the Preds dealt Mason, and then Ellis was supplanted by Rinne and traded away, and now Rinne is signed long-term and Mason has been brought back to be his #2.

Why? We needed a backup and got a veteran one relatively cheap.

I liked Mason when he was here and his best years were in a Predators sweater. I like it and it was cheap.

I was not pleased when he was here the first go round. In a back-up roll he needs more starts than he will get to be as sharp as he can be. 10 to 12 starts will be tops for him. It severly limited Lindback and will Mason as well. Would have prefered a guy nearing the end of there career other than Mason.

36 year old Mason is approaching the end of his career and put up a decent GAA last season as a 20 game playing backup. SV% was a bit low.

... because at the time we weren't about to pay $3mil for a backup goalie when Ellis surpassed Mase as the starter.

Well I guess they can round out my day and sign Tootoo as well. Two of the three players I would have never wanted to see again. Heck Trade Pekka and bring back Ellis and that would be my trifecta.

I'm ok with bringing Mason back. Not going to post great numbers, but is happy with a backup role, and a great locker room/community guy.

Side note, good to see you around Byrddog. You still have those jerseys? haha

What other vet, UFA goalies were out there as a better and affordable choice? Roloson? Raycroft? Montoya? Hedberg? Johnson? Auld? Turco?

I like this signing. Mason has a nice head, very shiny. Solid goalie too.

Thank you- no Dan Ellis. Mason was the ultimate loyal Pred. His problem was that he wanted to win TOO badly when he became starter and the team stayed here after the threatened move. IMO, he put too much pressure on himself but he was a diehard Pred more than almost any other player we've had. I wish Suter had a bit of that view... and Weber... and.... and....

Can't not be pleased with this for only 1 year and a proven vet. Good to have him back for a year.
