Because of that, Poile has expressed going the trade route if none of his targets come in at a price he likes.
“There are a lot of managers who believe there will be a secondary market with more trading after the free-agency period because of teams not getting exactly what they want,” Poile said. “They have to maybe trade with each other to do that.”

There's always something to not like.
This guy is too expensive. This guy is too risky. This guy will cost too many assets. This guy might be injury prone. This guy's contract is too long.
Someone could clone Wayne Gretzky circa 1983 and Poile will find something not to like.
Hell, we don't even like our own drafted players - Colin Wilson.
But it's OK, because we'll make the playoffs and might get to the second round and that will be recognized as a great achievement around these parts.
Sounds good if it works, but unfortunately he said the same thing last offseason. He's right though. Unless you land Parise, getting top end talent in this UFA class is impossible. Today is mainly for depth moves, and our depth is fine.
problem with trades is it cost assets and salary too. and trades dont pan out alot of times. more variables.. risky to go that route.
I'd say trades pan out way more often than UFA signings. Building your team through the UFA market almost never works. Drafting and trades are the way to go
If Suter goes to the Red Wings then I wish him all the worst in the future and I think it would be a stab in the back to the Preds. I hope he doesn't decide to go there...
Not expecting much from it. Will talk about Gill, Gaustad, and Mason. Will say the UFA market is expensive and underwhelming. Still hopes to sign Suter. Might look for a trade later on. We have young guys looking to step up, etc.

It's pretty bad when the fans can almost quote verbatim the speech the GM gives this time EVERY year.
Would be nice to be talking about how JVR or Matt Read would be helping next year. It would make fretting about where Suter is going I sign a little easier right now.

That is a pretty terrible idea. You don't purposely make your team worse right before a playoff run.
Plus, JVR for the rental of Suter is a pretty far fetched pipe dream.
A) we wouldn't have been worse, maybe a little weaker defensively but we would have been better offensively not only last year but for the future. I'd rather have had that than a second round flame out and the very real possibility that Suter walks for nothing.
B) apparently you didn't watch Philly in the playoffs because they would definitely traded some of their offensive depth for a #1 defenseman. Plus had exclusive negotiating rights to extend him.
