I'd take Palushaj over Gomez.

Same here, Gomez is basically useless at this point.

Emelin and Subban are not players who stand in front of the net and win the battles that you need to win to be successful. That type of player is not on the Habs roster. Tinordi could be one of those players down the road but not now. They need help there in my opinion but Bergevin would certainly know defense well. We'll see what he does.
LA Detroit Buffalo Calgary Vancouver Edmonton Winnipeg Colorado Phoenix Tampa bay just to name a few

that's my point exactly. LL, Palushaj, Geoffrion, and I am sure we can name three or four more capable of filling a 3rd line role.

Why pay a guy 7+M who is obviously on the way out, instead of a young guy who will earn less than 1/7th of that and will be more effective?

don't try, some guys are never satisfied. they could all be Weber clones and there would be complaints about mobility or too many penalties.

Anyone think that Brodeur would come to Montreal for cheaper to Mentor Price?

No chance in hell, he won't even talk to Toronto where he would get the majority of starts.

He'll likely go to Chicago or San Jose.

This is how I see the Canadiens next year. Top 6 is movable, bottom 6 seem fixed to me.

Erik Cole-David Desharnais-Brian Gionta
Max Pacioretty-Tomas Plekanec-Rene Bourque
Brandon Prust-Lars Eller-Colby Armstrong
Travis Moen-Petteri Nokelainen-Ryan White
Blake Geoffrion-Louis Leblanc-Aaron Palushaj

Andrei Markov-PK Subban
Tomas Kaberle-Alexei Yemelin
Josh Gorges -Rafael Diaz
Francis Bouillon-Yannick Weber

Carey Price
Peter Budaj

Well realistically at this point, assuming Price, Subban, and Eller sign for about $13m combined, we have this for next season, with about $2.5m left over if the cap stays at 70m.

Patches-DD-Cole
Bourque-Pleks-Gionta
Moen-Eller-Armstrong
Prust-Gomez-White
Extra: Leblanc (probably AHL instead), Nokelainen

Gorges-Subban
Markov-Emelin
Kaberle-Bouillon
Extra: Weber

Price
Budaj

That's certainly an upgrade on last year but most likely not a playoff team. If we can bury Gomez and get a Semin, Jagr, or Doan for $4-5m(or even Parise, though that's unlikely and would cost too much to add the next thing) and a $3-4m 2nd pairing defenceman to allow Emelin to play fewer minutes we could definitely make it in as a 6-8 seed. For example,

Patches-DD-Cole
Semin (~$5m)-Pleks-Gionta
Moen-Eller-Bourque
Prust-Moore ($1.5m)-Armstrong
Extra: White, Nokelainen (Leblanc in AHL)

Gorges-Subban
Markov-Salo/Roszival/Carle (~$3.5)
Kaberle-Emelin
Extra: Bouillon (Weber in AHL/traded for a pick)

We'd have almost $1.75m left over, that team could definitely make the playoffs, and I don't even think it's too far-fetched a scenario!

Under this scenario, even if it's the "what we have right now" line-up, I'd still take Nokes over Gomez on the fourth line. Gomez' play just doesn't fit a fourth line.

I hope we will give Diaz a chance. No thanks to UFA dman at this point. Altern Kaberle and Diaz throughout the season. The guy can develop into a very good player I feel.

I was a huge fan of Moore, I'd be happy to have him back. Semin... not so much. Jagr and Doan would be great additions though.

Haha I just totally forgot about Diaz, I agree that he's got some good upside and I'd like to have him next year but I feel if our goal is to make the playoffs we'd be better off getting another top-4.

Also I agree that Nokes is a much more able 4th liner than Gomez but if we have that first line-up on Day 1 I think management would want Gomez to be playing ahead of Nokes

You've relegated Louis Leblanc to a fifth line. Is that all he'll good for? If so, he was a wasted first round draft pick. I wouldn't agree with that. Did you really mean it?

Jeez, the guy was drafted 3 years ago and just played his first pro season, he really doesn't have to be an NHL regular yet...

I'd try to get Chris Stewart from the Blues for Eller +, then sign ...oh, I don't know. Hudler maybe.

really? you'd give up Eller for Stewart? Why Stewart? He's the same type of player as Bourque.

And, BTW, love the name you got there "FireBergevin" hasn't held the job for 2 months and already he needs to be replaced eh?

As a matter of fact a Geoffrion - Leblanc - Palushaj line would be great in Hamilton. And they could work on their deficiencies with an excellent coaching and development staff. In 1-2 years they will look good as 2nd/3rd liners (if they max out their potential)

He's Rene Bourque on steroids. He has similar traits, you mean.

If St. Louis is willing to give him up for cheap, even better.

I wouldn't even trade Eller straight up for Stewart.

Neither would I.

Eller might never progress much above where he was last year, but he might also develop into a 20 goal 35+ assist guy.

Good 2 way cetnerman with size too.

Funny seeing everybody clamoring to dump Bourque at all cost then we hear about trading young assets for a younger version of Bourque in Stewart.

Pretty hard to mentor a 25 year old, 3 time All Star.

Like someone else mention, my fifth line is mostly emergecy callup from Hamilton, except one, I think Palushaj will stay as the 13th forward.

Leblanc need another season in Hamilton before full time NHL, with time he could end-up on a second line but it will take some time.
