Closest Lower League Hockey to Hollywood.

Hi, I'm an English guy who moved to Hollywood at the start of the year and for next season I was wanting to go watch some lower league hockey as well as the Kings games I got to see this year. I've been searching around and it looks like UCLA is the closest to me and I was just wondering if anybody else has gone? what's the quality of hockey like? is it easy to get to from Hollywood? etc.

If anyone could help me out that would be fantastic.

Cheers.

The next level down from The Kings would be in Anaheim.

This is a big step down from what the Kings play but it is what I think you may want. They have a team that has some talent, but most people just don't give a **** about them because they are not The Kings.

They charge quite a bit of money to get in there and watch their inferior product though. When you are there be prepared to have to explain to other "fans" what is going on and what is happening with the game.

Check out the Ontario Reign. About an hour drive from LA. The skill level will be higher than college hockey (at least UCLA hockey) but the goonery is also really high. Expect to see lots of fights and a medium amount of skilled play.

Shame the Long Beach Ice Dogs folded. But yeah, the closest minor league team is the Ontario Reign, which is about a 35-40 mile drive east of LA. But like Wooty said, there's a second-tier team down in Anaheim. Kings fans easily outnumber their 10 fans when the _ucks host the Kings.

Uh...isn't this insulting to second-tier teams??? More like tenth-tier at best...

I am not saying UCLA/So cal hockey is a joke, but when I can make 2 of the teams they play against, you know it isn't the most top notch around...

I'm not too fussed about the quality as I used to watch a lot of non-league football and 2nd tier hockey back in England. While obviously the atmosphere won't be as good as back home I just thought it'd be more fun (and cheaper) than going to the Kings a lot.

A few of the local rinks have Junior teams. I know Valencia has the Flyers in the WSHL.

When I started writing my "anaheim post" I really did start with some of the college teams and then thought of midget teams and then I started processing where the rinks where.

Then my mind went crazy... but to be serious,

If you really mean in the actual Hollywood area (Hollywood is a neighborhood in the actual City of Los Angeles. It is not itself a city.) then I think the closest rinks maybe Burbank??? Culver??

To give an example, the Kings practice in El Segundo which is on the West side starting down to the south of the city. Near there is Culver City, Lakewood is decently close then my neighborhood rink Bay Harbor (the Skating Edge)

All the local colleges have club teams. Off the top of my head, USC, UCLA, LMU, Pepperdine, Etc. all have teams.

You might see some good Midget games and even higher level games there.

Here is a list of all the SCAHA clubs http://www.scaha.com/clubs.pl

I coached my kids Midget team a billion years ago and the violence that those kids bring to the game is overwhelming. You may like it.

Check out the valencia flyers, they play in the wshl. Its junior A tier III so it's not the best but its better than most options. Other than that if you want to watch youth hockey I'd say check out the 18aaa kings.

Long Beach has the Bombers in that league as well that play at Glacial Garden. The good part of Valencia is that they have beer and most of the games are on the weekend, for 8 bucks you get your money worth. I think the season starts at the end of September.

Cheers lads. I live in Hollywood so I guess if that's the Hollywood area, whatever, that's where I live (I'm guessing it's similar to say in England I stay in Shoreditch, which is part of London, but it's Shoreditch).

As I said previously, the quality of the hockey isn't a massive issue, I've got the Kings games live and Philly on the telly for good hockey. Junior games would be good, anything to keep me busy outside of work that doesn't involve drinking would be lovely.

While I'm here, anyone know of any lower league football (soccer) I can go watch? The lower quality the better.

For soccer, depending what you'd consider lower league, you could go watch MLS and find a Chivas USA game. But for the truly lower league, you could head out to the Anaheim Convention Center and watch the indoor PASL-Pro Anaheim Bolts. How this league gets away calling itself Pro is beyond me. The entire indoor soccer setup is trucked up from San Diego.

But if you're looking for minor league sports of all varieties checkout www.oursportscentral.com it has links to most of the minor leagues and their teams in addition to news and press releases about the teams. For teams in the LA area, here's a direct link to their LA page http://www.oursportscentral.com/serv...ate=California note on the side it has some other closer cities nearby.
