It was desperation. They needed offense during the most critical games of the season. They weren't getting it from the guys on the roster (spares like Vincour), so they went with a kid. Total gamble, but whatever.
Except, you know, they didn't put him in the position to provide that offense until the team was out of the race.
Do you think it has something to do that the Stars defensive prospect pool is so well therefore Souray didn't get a multiple year contract, but Whitney with 40 years 2 contract years? So if you summarize our offensive prospect pool isn't NHL ready like the defensive.
Right, Dillon seems to be ready to take Souray's roster spot, while no one is clearly ready to take a top-6 forward spot, and even if they are there are multiple openings.
Nice term, nice player. Don't like the no movement but if we suck , he will move. If you get Doan for same length, then pp is fixed. Lots of defensive 5-6 d-man if Dillion not ready. Still think they make a play for Garrison

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Yotes PP was only marginally better than ours.
In terms of getting the most effective player while staying light on our feet and not getting tied to a gargantuan commitment. Like with Ryder.
Ah. Yeah, that's good.
I just figured if you're going to "win" UFA, you should probably make the playoffs. These signings are fine, but they are more akin to putting your finger in the dyke than actually building a new, solid foundation.

Good ... you're going to fail if your goal is to build a new, solid, foundation via free agency. It's so rare for a top talent to reach the market that when they do they are looking for major, franchise crippling money.
The rest are a bunch of moderately talented yet severely over-paid players.
If you're not plugging holes to wait for the kids to develop or signing a couple last pieces to make yourself a true contender ... you're going to get burned in free agency.
I am completely shocked that so many people like this signing. I'm ok with it too, but I figured it would be like 80/20 against it.
Whitney seems like a great fit to play with Benn and he seems like a great guy to guide the kids along - perhaps even as the captain if Morrow is moved.
If you look at our moves so far as a group, we traded Ribeiro for Eakin, Whitney, and a 2nd round pick. A lopsided trade, though Whitney's age is a consideration.

I'm not in any particularly disagreement, other than the "franchise crippling money" part. Lots of top free agents have sound contracts that help their team. Hossa in Chicago. Richards in New York. Wherever Suter goes. Those are franchise players worth every penny.
I do think it's important GM Joe pulled the trigger and paid the man his money. It seems like a lot for a guy who is 40, but the Stars really needed this.
I think this signing also means Ryder is practically a mortal lock to be traded this deadline and that makes me happy too. Ryder should hopefully be worth a good prospect and pick come February.

I don't think it changes much to be honest. Nieuwendyk still hasn't done anything yet during his tenure to make us think he is willing to trade good pieces away at the deadline. The only way he trades Ryder is if the team is terrible. So oddly enough I disagree with you for the sole reason that we did sign Whitney, whom I think will have a productive year and help our team.
I was a big Ribs fan but even with the #2 center position still in question I think our team is better with the subtraction of Ribeiro and the addition of Whitney, Eakin's potential contributions notwithstanding.
