Hey guys, Nuck fan here. I've always been a fan of the Lightning, and I just wanted to wish you guys well, and wish Sami the best, because he's awesome. I just posted this on the main boards and thought I'd post it here:

Salo is awesome. I love him, honestly, he's an amazing human being, and he's an amazing hockey player. And there are few things I would like to see more than him winning a cup before he retires.

He's lost a step recently, but he's so smart and so skilled, he's really sound defensively. He really is like a 1st pairing dman. And his bomb on the PP is one of the best in the league.

Congrats! And good luck!

Of those affected by the Lightning's signing of free agent defenseman Sami Salo, perhaps none will be more excited than Salo's son, Oliver.

The 9-year-old is a huge fan of Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos, and patterns his game after him.

"He loves to score goals," Salo said.

But Oliver was sleeping Sunday night, when his father, on the first day of free agency, signed a two-year, $7.5 million deal.

"He's going to be thrilled," Salo said by phone from his native Finland. "It will be like Christmas morning when he hears where we're going."
...
He doesn't have a Stamkos jersey yet," Salo said. "He'll get one, for sure."
Quote:
"I have a pretty good knowledge of the history of his injuries and none of these injuries are really joint related or degenerative things that may limit a players' career," Yzerman said. "He's just banged up and missed games because of things. To the best of my knowledge he's in good shape."

"I'm feeling great," said Salo, who in 69 games last season with Vancouver (he missed six with a concussion) had nine goals, seven power-play goals, 25 points and was plus-7 with an average 20:26 of ice time. "Last year was probably my healthiest in a long time. I hate when everybody talks about the injuries. A lot of things have gone with bad luck."

Salo said he has "two or three or four years left in me. I feel really good."

The more I think about it, the more I ilke this signing. He's a righty shot which will be invaluable on the PP. We all know we needed more experience on defense with Brewer being our only vet back there and with a new young goalie in Lindback, it's a bonus for him too knowing he's got some guys in front of him that know what the **** they're doing.

I think he'll be a solid 2nd pairing guy and is right handed, which we were in short supply of on our defence. Obviously it's an overpayment, but such is the case in free agency nowadays.

TB instantly became my team in the East. You guys won't regret this deal!

Where can I order my Salo jersey? Never wanted one before.

Hope he stays healthy-ish.

Take good care of Sami, guys. Gonna miss him. People who say he's still a top pairing dman in the NHL are out to lunch, though. Still very smart and positionally sound, but he's clearly running out the clock now. Still has one of the hardest shots in the league, but it's just as likely to injure one of his own teammates than hit the net.

Class guy, very good NHL dman but his best days are in the rear-view mirror. Can be a great mentor to your young guys and the 20-30 games he'll be injured will give them some ice-time in drips and drabs.

*sigh* First Ohlund now Salo. I'll have to shell out for a Centre Ice package next year to catch some Tampa games. Best of luck to Sami and the Lightning.

There are just not enough defensive players to go around for 30 teams.

So lets be real happy that we did get some help.

And cross your fingers that more help is coming.

I'm extremely happy that we got this guy.

Most of you have no idea whats involved with getting caliber players.

And we just got one.

One of the most underrated D-men in the league.

I wished we would sign him but I didn't expect this from Yzerman

Don't like the money though.

Why is every free agent signing by any team an over paying?

To me, there are no such things as over paying.

Its supply and demand

simple business 101

its what the market bears.

If you want gas for your car and its going for 4 dollars a gallon.

And you pay it ... is it over paying?

what is the alterative?

This over paying talk drives me nuts. Thats what the guy cost.

Lets see our GM says Salo is only worth 2 Mill. but other teams want to pay him 4 Mill

Guess what ... hes worth 4 Mill. thats the market price, your not over paying.

This is way to simple ....

If your over paying you have to show me what you could have done with the same money.
Show me how you could have spent the money more wisely.

The alternatives are you draft your own gas, trade for gas, sign your gas before it hit's the market, sign cheaper gas, have a good GM who can negotiate with the gases' agent and get a good deal, get European gas with potential, explain to gas that taking a cut can save $ to spend on more gas, or get together with other GMs and refuse to pay gas soo much money or they can go gas up Russia.

It's an overpayment but that's what happens when you sign someone as a free agent. It shows that the franchise lately has been pretty bad at drafting and developing the position. Salo will be a good signing in the 60-70 games he plays if he gets 17-20 minutes a game playing on the PP, not playing on the PK, and not having to matchup against top lines night in and night out. I think he can definitely be a boost to the PP with his shot. Sounds like Yzerman is trying to find one more defenseman, interesting to see who that will be.

I am definitely worried that this may end up becoming another Ohlund like incident. Anytime you hire a glass cannon, it is a gamble. He sounds like the perfect man too put next to Brewer though. And we need his experience desperately. At the least he can teach the boys something.

We still need one more defender though. Salo sounds great, but he doesnt sound like a top pairing guy from what I have read. Lets see what the Yzerplan has in store tomorrow.

For Salo, who fielded several offers Sunday, he saw a good fit with the Lightning and knew about the situation in Tampa Bay during previous conversations with former Canucks' teammate and current Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund.

Seriously, I think this is going to work out just fine. Veteran presence on the blue line, great shot for PP. I'm not going to be surprised when TBT headlines read "Lightning player injured in a freak collision with a manatee", but fortunately we have a lot of guys in the AHL ready to jump in for a few games when necessary.

Remember the Yzerplan - "Develop core players and compliment that core through free agency". All of our signings have followed that policy. Salo is not going to be a core player that we build our dynasty around, he's just there to show the kids how to play D and turn over his post to one of our own home grown players after his contract is up.

His stats do worry me. I really wonder who they're going to pair him with. Hopefully Hedman, as he needs someone more mobile and a little shot happy.

Salo isn't really as shot happy as you'd like him to be. He has a great shot, though, when he does take it. Salo's greatest asset is decision-making. He very seldom makes mistakes.

I'm going to miss him on the Canucks and wish him all the best in Tampa Bay.

TB beating Calgary warmed my heart, and seeing Ohlie and Salo go there is great. Neither really had a spot here considering the amount they got.

While we all know us Canucks fans are abunch of aholes who riot and dive a lot, I am sure many of us will be cheering for you this year. Unless of course FLA gets Lu.

Note to TBL fans: get him some good sunscreen. He is really white.
