I have to say, I really like the sound of that!

Love the Newspaper quote. Hope to hear a lot more like that over the course of the season.

this is my favorite part! take the PK minutes away and the big guys have more gas in the tank for double shifts in the third.

The more I read about this guy, the more I like him.

A 4th line center who is great at draws, is not afraid to start ****, kills powerplays, and fights?

Sounds like the IDEAL 4th liner if you ask me!

I'm not so sure that he'd be getting a ton of PK time...

For forwards, I'd rather see:
Cullen
Koivu
Powe
Brodziak
Veilleux
Mitchell

...on the PK before Konopka. What I would do for the second PK unit would be put Konopka out for the face off and then run a conditional: If FO = Won, then change Konopka on clear, else have him PK.

well with his PIMs maybe he won't be on the PK as often as he's in the box...

Forgot Clutter, bozak. Who's likely the best PKer outside of Koivu on the team.

Also, this team had a ton of options to play PK last season. Yet Mikko still got an awful lot of time there. When he's one of the team's better players, there's no reason to take him off the ice...

Actually, I didn't "forget" him...

I left him off because I expect him to be traded when we don't land either Parise or Suter...

It is certainly going to be a nice change of pace from seeing teams cheap shot us at will last year.

Thanks for nothing, Shannajoke.

You need to have bottom 6 grit to compete out west, and you need depth, the west is just so good, I mean there are a couple years where 2 or 3 teams here would make it in the east, but can't crack the top 8 here. Now that we have atleast an average bottom 6, things are going to change.

Shanahan..... Let's not go there.... Why does he even fill that position ?

For those with the Shanahan whining, the league discipline office is likely going to be a major bargaining chip the league offers up in CBA negotiations. Players despise the fact that the league is in charge of those things and want a third party in charge of it.

Same thing I heard towards the end of last season. Yet, I haven't heard it mentioned as a plank in the PAs arguments for this first meeting.

The proposal that I heard was a 3 person committee.
1 League Rep
2 Player Association Rep
3 Neutral 3rd party

It's something I hope the players win out on, because there has to be a better way to do discipline than let Shanny run roughshod over the league, blaming the victim all the time.

Well, even in that scenario, it removes the "Shanahan factor" as he's not making unilateral decisions.

I think Shanascam is a terrible judge of what did or did not happen in regards to bad hits. I really think the panel idea is the best one to go with in regards to handing out suspensions.

From a Sens fan who watched him all year.

Pro: Wins a S**TLOAD of faceoffs.
Con: Wins a lot of them with his hands, which the NHL has made illegal starting in 2012-13. Not sure how his faceoff stats will fare under the new rules. I wouldn't expect the ~60% wins anymore, though I'm sure he'll compensate somehow.

Pro: Is a playoff warrior, and brings his best game when it counts most, in the postseason.
Con: Will look like a borderline ECHL player on some nights in the long stretches of the regular season, when the games don't matter as much. Has a hard time when pinned in his own zone. Plays his best hockey when he doesn't fight, which is kind of a Catch-22 for guys of his ilk.

Pro: fights a ton.
Con: doesn't actually fight during his fights... he sort of just wrestles guys mostly. Will legit throw 'em on occasion, though. He has a tendency to fight at the worst possible time, too. Like, 2-goal lead, with possession in the offensive zone? Oh, great, thanks for the fight, Konopka. Also, he's NOT a "nuclear deterrent", he loses as many fights as he wins, so he's not the ideal "policeman", though his sheer willingness to fight with anyone usually deters some pests from acting up during games.

Pro: Is a great guy, great teammate, great locker room guy, very accessible.
Con: no cons here. His personality is 100% awesome. Great dressing room add.

Pro: Very physical, lays hits a ton for his limited ice time.
Con: every ref in the league seems out to get him. He will draw penalties that, literally, no one else in the league would ever have called on them. This guy could take a slapshot with no one around him, and get called for "slashing" simply because he waived his stick around all funny and has a bad rep.

I imagine you guys will like him, just keep in mind his limitations, and enjoy the ride. We really have too many bottom-6 guys here, hence why it was easy for us to let him go.

He played on our PK unit in Ottawa mostly because of his unreal ability to win faceoffs.

A lot of times, he'd start on the PK, win a faceoff, the Sens would ice the puck, and he'd come off the ice immediately for a guy like Condra or O'Brien, who are better penalty-killers, but not as good on the draw.

Well we already have a nuclear deterrent in Kassian, but everyone is afraid to fight him. Hopefully Konopka can take care of the sissies who refuse to dance with Kassian.

He comes close to the ideal 4th liner for me.

One, I want our 4th line center to be a central part of the PK, and it sounds like this guy can do it.

Two, he can win draws; even if our 4th liners get penned in their own zone and ice the puck, he can get them out of the cycle of doom.

Three, he can fight - why not? How many 4th line centers have multiple dimensions to their games?

Four, he isn't incapable of playing the game of hockey.

Five, he costs less than 1 million per year.

Maybe he has bad BO, but I can't find anything to complain about here.

A friend of mine from the east coast starts an IM conversation with me today...

Him: how are you feeling after all of the signings by the Wild?
Me: Oh, you know how much I've been wanting Konopka on our team.
Him: ...
Me: What?
Him: I'm not talking about Konopka.
Me: I am talking about Konopka.
Him: ...
Me: Listen, Konopka brings (... filled him in ...) to the team. That is exceptionally valuable.
Him: Really? You want to talk Konopka?
Me: Of course. What can *I* possibly say about Suter/Parise that hasn't already been said?
Him: I'm pissed that they didn't go to my hometown Wings.
Me: Yeah, also another reason why I wanted to talk about Konopka...
Him: Huh?
Me: I realize that you were born and grew up in Detroit and are a huge Wings fan. I really didn't want to get into that conversation with you considering how angry that entire fan base is right now. So, I figured I'd talk to you about a different signing, which has gotten glossed over, in the hope of diverting your anger.
Him: Oh.
