When a player has a lot of aggression penalties like elbowing, boarding, charging, roughing, etc., it's typically indicative that he brings a physical element to the game.
I'd agree with the physical element, but what about the type of body someone has? If Semin is going to run around trying to hit someone in order to seperate the puck from the player he'd be less effective than trying to steal the puck via a poke or lift-check or slash.

Stephen Gionta brings more of a physical element than Semin. Body type has nothing to do with it. It's about desire and toughness.

Yes, also more physical than Mojo and players of his ilk. Given a players specific skill set, what would you have player like Semin and Johansson do? Hit a player or trying to steal the puck?
When all is said and done, you have to think the teams hungry for Ryan will be willing to give up strong NHL talent in the packages they present to Anaheim. It sounds like the Sabres are starting with Roy. The Flyers will no doubt look to assemble an enticing set of NHL and futures assets. That's a player who will attract plenty of attention. I don't think futures will get it done from the Caps. Pieces like Laich and Green are at least proven on the big stage. If Green is viewed by Bob Murray the same way that Green is viewed by many Caps fans (#captainpasthisprime), then perhaps Laich as a starter is the way to go. His reputation is solid. Then keep adding.
It will be expensive, that's for sure. I am not sure that Johansson and Orlov have done enough to be core pieces in any proposal for Bobby Ryan.

Change Orlov to a draft pick or two and you got a deal. Mojo is replaceable. Kuz is still two years away. Who knows what he will be in two years. Career ending injury? Who knows? Ryan helps this team now and for the next two years. Next year with Forsberg over here would be a time to make a serious run.
Am I in the minority in that I wouldn't deal Carlson, Orlov, or Alzner even straight up in a deal for Ryan, let alone in a package? Just curious. Any team in the league would drool over having one of them in their organization, having all three of them is something else. We're lucky.
Most of these Ryan proposals seem to be about cutting off an arm to fix a leg.
Johansson is the only good young player that I'd consider including in a package for Ryan -- if the Caps for some reason felt very strongly that MJ will never make it as 2C. So MJ, Laich, 1st for Ryan... maybe. Kuznetsov is a classic case of being more valuable to the Caps than other teams; Orlov's position makes him nearly untradeable, IMO, now that 2C vacancy is filled.
In any case, even if they're thinking in this direction, Caps can probably get a better deal if they wait for contenders to fill their rosters and for demand to drop. They'd have an added advantage of seeing how their team shakes down in the beginning of the season. Maybe Galiev stakes a claim, and lessens need for top-6 skill, who knows. If trades are the Caps' route, I think it makes sense to expect them in-season, not during this summer. Since cap space is not an issue, they can sign a cheap reclamation project on a 1 year deal, then wait to see what else develops.
edit: forgot about Green. But I kind of have doubts that NHL teams really want him at his price tag. Though I guess with BB in Anaheim, who knows. Green, Laich, 1st for Ryan I'd do in a second. Or mix in Galiev, whatever.

Plenty of lanky players have filled out to solidify their frames. All it takes is dedication in the weight room during the offseason.
Sure, lots have. Maybe it's just my opinion that hitting and physical play isn't inherently better. But I'll stop with the Semin stuff, this is Joey Crabb's playground, after all.

Ordinarily I would think that the Caps would have to part with an Alzner or a Carlson, but in this case the Ducks have defense out the gills right now. They just traded one away because of the excess on their blueline (Visnovsky). So Alzner and Carlson would probably be safe.
