Torres suspension cut down 4 games

Sources say Gary Bettman has reached a decision on Raffi Torres suspension appeal. Expected to reduce suspension by 4 games. 12 down to 8.

UGH!!!

I hate this.. why because they didn't go to the final

Hossa was blacked out on the ice and Torres gets the benefit of an NHL owned team

From twitter:

Bettman just reduced the suspension of a player on a team the league owns, but there's no corruption in the NHL. As you were.

Why do this now? The timing of this is just bizarre, especially since his appeal on the matter was weeks ago. At this point it WAS a non-subject, which WAS a good thing for the NHL as it's negative press. I'm not saying the topic will blow up and make the leauge look bad, but even just being mentioned is going to hurt the NHL some.

somehow I'm thinking that Torres playing 4 more games isn't really going to make PHX world beaters.

Posturing for CBA negotiations, perhaps.

Torres already missed all of the important games, though. Missing the rest of the playoffs when his team went to the conference finals will hopefully keep him thinking twice before laying that kind of hit again. It certainly has more of an effect than missing four extra games in October would.

He obviously did it now because he releases it and it the information gets covered under the signing of Parise and Suter

This sucks. So unfair. The suspension was totally justified given what he did.

That's fine but Torres should be on premanent probation where another late and blatant head shot means a full season suspension or more. Hopefully it won't come to that and Torres will think twice for a change and no longer deliver the cowardly cheap shot.

So he was suspended 21 games instead of 25.

Hard to feel upset over it.

RT @bruce_arthur: Really hope Marian Hossa's concussion was also reduced by the NHL on appeal.

I doubt that. He didn't see anything wrong with the hit...why would he change?

This Raffi Torres reduced suspension smacks of a goodwill olive branch to the NHLPA w/CBA negotiations & discipline process on the docket
Isn't Hossa part of the same NHLPA ?

Meh, we'd already lost what really mattered at the moment: 5 minute major. That's because Shaw was obviously the real head hunter.

Yes but the "olive branch" has much less to do with the individual players than it does the union representing them.

Essentially, the whole is more important than a given individual member (or two of them).

I think the NHLPA had legitimate gripe to an extent. I wish Torres was out of the league but it is what it is. I don't think it was a mistake to reduce the suspension and I think the upcoming CBA negotiations might have played a part. I wouldn't be shocked if more than a few players were a little unhappy with how supplemental discipline is administered.

Heh. Man, there were some ridiculous suspensions and calls in that first round.

Shaw getting five for Smith's soccer performance and Torres not even spending a second in the box was beyond pathetic.

Torres now only loses 8 games worth of pay instead of 12. He didn't lose any money over the playoff games lost. His "fine" effectively cut by a third. That's why you should be upset.

Bettman sucks.

What you just mentioned right there...makes it REAL tough to be a fan of the game sometimes. Between absolutely horrific and inconsistent officiating, to completely erratic supplemental discipline for similar acts...it flat out angers me sometimes. There is absolutely positively no rhyme nor reason behind how this game is policed on the ice or after the fact. The greatest assets this game has are its players...and they simply refuse to protect and punish in a manner reflective of that.

I'm really wondering what next year will be like. I don't care about a few missed calls here and there, it's the precedent the calls establish which affects the game. What's being called in general?

If you never call diving/embellishment it becomes rampant.

The same goes with the disgusting absence of obstruction penalties, what obstruction? It's an obvious win for teams who play the game on the boards.

When the refs miss major penalties as a guy leaves on a stretcher on top of all this you get a goon league.

We all like solid hits and physical play, but last years reffing was completely out of line.

I know exactly what you mean. It actually made it pretty tough for me to even continue watching the playoffs at all past the 1st round. Granted, about 80% of that was because the hockey was so incredibly boring, but still. What you said is spot-on.
