Moose is the man:

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice

Hedberg, by the way, did have other offers for 2 years and at least one for more money. He also turned down more money last year.

I think so too. Vanbiesbrouck who played like not even 10 games in 2 years with us is the only one who comes close, and that's no surprise cause he's the most winning USA born goaltender in NHL history.

Glad to see Moose back. Fine athlete and a quality individual.

Also happy to hear that Moose finally reunites with his family. It must have been difficult for him to go through the past two years.

It's probably been posted elsewhere here, but it seems like he wasn't going to move them on one-year deals, that's why he wanted a two-year deal this time. And like Marty, he got a two-year deal from multiple teams but he wanted NJ more.

I just realized that with this new 2-year-deal, Moose actually will become the longest-tenured Backup-Goaltender in Devils History.

Or am I wrong in that?

Idk seemed like Terreri was here for quite a few years as a backup goalie.

Terreri I believe was here '93-94, '94-95 and parts of '95-96, '99-00 and '00-01. Basically three and a half full years, and he wasn't really the backup at first. Yeah Moose would be the longest-tenured. It feels like Clemmensen was here forever too, just doesn't seem like it cause he didn't play at all till '08. I know he was here in '05-06 and '06-07, was in the Leafs' system for a year then came back for '08-09 so three years.

Clemmer played 6 seasons in jersey, plus 1 for the super season, plus 1 where he only played in albany

Six, damn...I didn't think he was here (in NJ, I knew he was in Albany) before the lockout though I guess he did replace Schwab for a time in '04 when he got hurt.

EDIT: He played twenty minutes in two games during '01-02. Not really something that counts. In '03-04 he was backup part of the way when Schwab got hurt before the lockout ('02-03 he was in Albany the whole year). Then the full-time backup for two seasons after the lockout, before leaving then coming back for '08-09. So three seasons plus part of one other.

Hedberg will be the longest tenured backup with the Devils when this contract is over.

Terreri backed up, and probably even split time close to evenly with Sean Burke, Craig Billington, and Marty from 88-96. Really didn't consider him a backup from 90-94. Burke may have gotten a few more starts, and Billington too, but it wasn't huge in favor of Burke/Billington in that time. Remember Terreri pretty much split time with Marty in 93/94. Jacques usually started one every other game. There were a few times Marty played good games, and Jacques would award him with a second consecutive start. In the playoffs he went with Marty aside from those games against Boston Terreri got the nod. Terreri backed up Marty full time from 98-01 just under 3 seasons before being to dealt at the deadline for Vanbiesbrouck to the Isles.

Clemmensen was a backup in 01/02. Didn't play much except in games Marty was pulled. Don't think he ever started one that season just pretty much dressed. He went to Albany, and Damphousse(I always forget all about this guy) then Beezer came out of retirement briefly, then Schwab backed up in 02/03. Clemmer was full time backup for the 03/04, 05/06, and 06/07 seasons.

EDIT - I should say Longest tenured FULL TIME backup with the big club. Clemmer played or dressed as backup for about 6 seasons straight. Won't count him as he bounced back and forth between Albany, and the big club the first few years.

I'm comfortable with Moose getting 20-25 starts/appearances next year.

I like the way Pete did it last year. Only thing I might do different is if there aren't many back to backs late in the season like in the last month like there weren't last year I would maybe start Hedberg once a week to give Marty a little rest. Didn't seem to matter this season, but another year older it couldn't hurt. Moose impressed me when he sat long too. Coming in, and getting a shutout after a month of not playing!

Moose may be the most beloved backup I've seen as a Devils fan in pretty much in the whole history of the team. The MOOOSSSEEEE chants have really caught on with the fans. I felt bad for the poor guy his first game he ever started at home for us. He got no help, and kept getting torched, and was booed out of the building. It was as bad as when Kovy got booed for the shootout flub.

I'm glad we got him back. I was dreading other moves. He was way better than all the backups last year in the league. I was thinking Lou might not want the 80 year old tandem back again, and that he would go with Biron, Gustavsson, or the dreaded Brent Johnson or Alex Auld. Glad I was wrong!
